Smile Info on: Studying Buddhism in Dharamsala

Hello All,
Can anyone share any information for westerners going to studying Buddhism in Dharamsala?
Is it possible for westerners to join a monastery?
If so what are the guidelines and requirements needed to do so?
How would a U.S citizen go about finding a way to stay long term with all the visa restrictions; Long term volunteer? Setting up my own nonprofit charity? or maybe getting a 5-10 year student visa from a monastery?

Any help would be great.

Respect and compassion,
Rigdzin
