I've met "hare krisna" folks in Calcutta, and in Vrindavan/Mathura, which is a between Delhi and Agra. Their big temple is in Vrindavan; it's said to be very spectacular.

A family I stayed with in Gujarat went to temples every day and prayed to Krishna, they were an ordinary family and everything else in their lives had little to do with Krishna.

In London (and many parts of the world) there is a group of 'Hare Krishna' followers whose whole life is devoted to 'Hare Krishna'.

What is the difference?

Is it the same Krishna?

The Gujarati people were going to worship in the local Krishna Temple according to the method they learnt from their forefathers.

The Hare Krishnas have formed a sect of their own and worship Krishna according to the method & teachings of their Guru.

Krishna is the same in both the cases. There are many more sects which worship Krishna, again acc to their particular tradition/s.

Krishna's Capital City was Dwaarakaa, now under the ocean off the coast of the current Dwaarakaa. This is on the Gujaraat Coast.

The difference I think is how groups of humans club together to interpret the path to god!! Each group claiming new insight!!
We've been doing it since the biginning of time it seems!!
It's why I'm so distrustful of instutionalised cults and religions they all seem to have the fingerprint of man tainting them with their ego!!

I agree with Cyberhippie.. For example take shimsila's previous comment,

"hare krishna is god, the embodiment of eternity, knowledge and bliss.
the only truth, read the bhagavat gita "

now here is the Christian spin..

"Jesus Christ is god, the embodiment of eternity, knowledge and bliss.
the only truth, read the Bible"

sound familiar? I am certain I have seen something similar as bumper stickers..

oke you make a good point there, but believe can be verry strong though..

ever heard of the maha mantra : hare krsna hare krsna krsna krsna hare hare hare rama hare rama rama rama hare hare.

chant this mantra 108 times on a chain of 108 pieces or only chanting the name will conect you to god, krishna, energy, whatever you wanna call it.

i think there will be a difference between the bhagavad gita and the bible

The ONLY ONLY ONLY way syndrome afflicts the followers rather than the founders. Nowhere in the 700 verses of the Bhagavad Geetaa does Krishna say that "I am the ONLY way". I am pretty sure even Jesus did not say similar things... they were injected by "followers" later on.

The Rig Veda (1.164.46) says:

ekam sat, vipraaH bahudhaa vadanti The Truth (sat) is ONE (ekam); (different) sages call it "differently"...

Sure, the Krishna mantra is powerful. So also the Raama mantra; so also the Naaraayana mantra.... and the Shiva mantra and... i could go on and on.

There is no such thing as the ONLY ONLY ONLY way.... there are many ways to reach the same goal.

I have the exclusive rights to GOD!! He has granted me patents and Copyright under the DiViNe Copyrights and Patents Act, 5214; for the next 3500 years! Get a God T-shirt free with every medallion you purchase thru this exclusive franchise!!! Beware of Fakes. Look for this hologram...

How does it sound?? Bunkum, isn't it? This is exactly the ONLY ONLY ONLY way syndrome.

Check out this website about Vrindavan and Mathura area. This is a large Hare Krishna community. I lived there for 11 years.
