Am posting these for all those who have not seen this.
NASA SHUTTLE IMAGES OF A MYSTERIOUS ANCIENT BRIDGE BETWEEN INDIA AND SRILANKA Courtesy : NASA Digital Image Collection The recently discovered bridge currently named as Adam's Bridge made of chain of shoals, c.18 mi (30 km) long, in the Palk Strait between India and Sri Lanka, reveals a mystery behind it. The bridge's unique curvature and composition by age reveals that it is man made. The legends as well as Archeological studies reveal that the first signs of human inhabitants in Sri Lanka date back to the a primitive age, about 17,50,000 years ago and the bridge's age is also almost equivalent. This information is a crucial aspect for an insight into the mysterious legend called Ramayana, which was supposed to have taken place in tretha yuga (more than 17,00,000 years ago). In this epic, there is a mentioning about a bridge, which was built between Rameshwaram (India) and Srilankan coast under the supervision of a dynamic and invincible figure called Rama who is supposed to be the incarnation of the supreme. This information may not be of much importance to the archeologist s who are interested in exploring the origins of man, but it is sure to open the spiritual gates of the people of the world to have come to know an ancient history linked to the Indian mythology. When I was in India last year, I visited Rameshwaram. There is a temple nearby which has pieces of the bridge kept there as well as their own framed copies of the NASA pictures, it was really interesting. I had wanted to get to the point in Sri Lanka where the bridge is but unfortunately, never made it there! Fascinating story.

In India, the Ramayana story is like saying "Good morning, the sun rises in the East!" every day. Mentally , no one really questions whether it really happened or not.... unless one learns other doctrines/philosophies etc. [& begins to question]
Nobody in India uses the term "myth" [or its equiv] for the Raama story. It is a part of "something which happened" where the details are part of folklore. Different versions of the Ramayana exist in Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia. Many Geographical locations associated with the Raama story abound. For, the traditional Indian no proof is necessary.... for the doubting mind, no proof is sufficient.... What matters is the transparent honesty of Raama, and we could try and live up to that ideal. Believe the story or not... the message IS relevant.

I remember when this story emerged in the newspapers, immediately the next day NASA sent a clarification that they have not made any such claims.. and it was widely speculated that it might be the work of Hindu fundamentalists.
Coming to the topic of Ramayana, I always wondered, how will it be possible to draw an exact route all through India (from ayodhya to sri lanka) at that time, without walking that route. It seems authentic enough to me ![]() I have heard that in Sri Lanka too, Ravana the chief antagonist of Ramayana, is being worshipped as a great dravidian king who died while protecting his country from a hindu invader (Rama). Can somebody verify this ???? |

In SriLanka, they believe in a different version of the story.
According to the Sinhalese, Ravana, their King is the Hero, and Raama, the Prince of Ayodhya was the villian. Accordingly to Sinhalese folk lore, Sita was supposed to be daughter of Ravana. And, he merely took her away to his palace, because she was suffering in the jungle. And, Ravana is supposed to have treated Sita with respect. But, in the versions that the Indians know of, and as is depicted in several books, movies and serials, it is portrayed and shown that Ravana wanted to marry Sita, because of her beauty, and hence tried all possible ways to convince her. He infact, used his magical powers, and showed the severed head of Raama, to prove to Sita, that he had killed her husband, and now, she is free to marry him. |

I think this is not a new 'discovery'. even the simple maps of india & lanka shows a kind of 'trail' linking them. Man made or otherwise, there is a geographical feature in this part (Google Palk Strait, the name of this narrow section). The area is springled with many tiney rocky islands....
They say even the lankan tip can be seen from one of the rock at the extreme end of indian side(?) Now we are actualy making the Sethusamudram shipping canal cutting through this strait |

But even in Indian version, Raavana is always depicted as a great scholar and king. only to be overtaken by his own greed, pride and ego. And he always treated Sita with respect.

What a fascinating story. Has there been much archeological exploration of the area?
