Best (Enlightening?) Spiritual Experience in India

Anyone had any outsanding spiritual experience in India? Any descriptions?

somewhere in the south of India . . . 1982 . . . I'm walking down the street, two Nikon's dangling around my neck like jewels . . . a young boy calls me over from the doorway of his house. I'm invited inside, asked to be part of the circle on the floor, six or eight people, a small fire in the middle of the circle, a single pot of food cooking. For every three scoops of food I'm given, the others get only one scoop. They're taking food out of their mouths to feed me. I'm Enlightened every time that experience comes to mind.

my first trip to india i went to study ayurveda in jaipur. one day i realize "I'm in INDIA!!" and i'm just sitting in this clinic every day, often simply reading and not learning anything due to lack of pancha karma patients. i decide to leave the clinic but am not sure where to go. i narrow it to Dharamsala, Katmandu and Pushkar. that night in a dream i am told to go to Dharamsala, a place that totally transformed my india experience since i abhored jaipur (and thus india). the story is a long one but i'll shorten it to say that i arrived just in time to celebrate the dalia lama's 50th year as a lama with him, having had no idea that he was even there. i felt divinely guided.

The following is something I posted in another thread a while ago, I wouldn't say it was an 'outstanding spiritual experience', but the kind of thing that gets me returning to India time & time again.....

When travelling in India, occasionally you see something that just stops you in your tracks and gets you thinking "That’s why I will always love India".

Most people will have had this experience many times, the one I enjoyed the most was on April 1st this year. (This is no April fool's joke)

I had been on an awful overnight train journey, not much sleep, a baby screaming half the night, and someone stole my water, I was so dry that I felt sick, at 06:00 the train pulled into Vadodara station, I got off, found some water and breakfast and made my way back to my carriage.

As I was approaching the carriage I saw a group of Krishna Hindu's walking in a circle, all clapping and singing, they had got off the train to offer their morning prayers, the porters and what looked like beggars then joined in.

It looked and sounded so wonderful, I couldn't move from the spot.

As often happens in India, I felt ashamed and cheated that I don't believe in any god.

These moments always seem to happen when you least expect it, no special Temple or Fort, just a railway platform in Gujarat.

Spiritual experience? no, not particularly ---and I don't see why spiritual experience should come here rather than anywhere else, spirituality does not depend on place.

But human experience ---Oh yes!

The feeling of humility and shame for not having given more when I could see in the guy's eyes that, yes, his story of a sick child was true, and he was so, so greatful for the (small to me) amount of money that I did give. The realisation that this country of haggling can make one mean.

Beggars have given me far more self-knowledge than I ever gave them cash. Perhaps the ones I didn't give to told me even more than the ones I did...

yes, this is true and probably the reason that i don't like to and seldom do it, even though some say this is an insult. i find it an insult to my senses to argue over prices. i pay what something is worth to me or leave it.

I do not know if you would call this spiritual / enlightening, but this is an experience I had.

Once our family visited Kanchipuram to see the Kanchi Maha Swamigal (the one that passed away quite a few years ago, not the one in a controversy now!).

It was past noon and he had finished his puja and started giving darshan. It was not too crowded. I was a young boy of about 13. Since we had all had the darshan in the morning once my people were all sitting at a distance in the hall from where you could not see the swami's room. As I joined the queue and approached him, one of the assistants called me. "You should not apprach the swami wearing your banian (vest)", he said loudly.

Embarassed, shamed, I simply walked away a little hurt. Since I was 13 and it was the first time I was there to see him, I did not know the rules. I quickly made my way towards where my family was sitting and joined them, without telling them what had happened.

A couple of minutes later, two of the swami's assistants came into the hall.

"A boy had come to see the swami wearing his banian. Where is he?". I crouched down further behind a pillar, but could not escape their view.

"It is you, right? Swami is calling you".

I went along, as my curious family and a crowd of onlookers followed. This time I remembered to remove my vest.

"Don't mind them.", so saying he gave me a fruit as I prostrated in front of him.

That felt really nice. In fact I attribute a lot of of what I today to the blessings I received from this great personality.

Guess that was a few years ago. HHDL says he was scheduled to have lunch with both Indira Gandhi and JK the day Indira was murdered.

For my own spiritual-human experiences...gee, where to start?
So many. If I get started I'll have enough to write about the rest of my life. Thank you India!
