Ayurveda in India
I have been to India 30 years ago as a tourist and this time I would like to visit there to learn more about Ayurveda (study), do yoga and meditation and experience the local people and the music. My concern is that I would be travelling alone so it would be ideal to go to a place that is easily accessible from a main centre and I would be picked up from the airport. Then I could use this one place as a base to travel out safely from. My second concern is that last time I was there I spent the entire time in my hotel room suffering from diarrhea and vomiting. I think it would be good now that I am learning about Ayurveda and maybe India has changed in 30 years to be more Westerner-friendly. Does anyone know where I could go in India to do these things, a place that is authentic, and also when it is not too hot. I can go in June/July. Thanks.

You seem to demand/expect a lot all at once, and yet give a very limited timeframe and no info on your budget. June/July is obviously the hottest season you can choose, so a hill-station seems about the only option, but you cannot be picked up from there unless you have a lot of money to spend. And you also want to be able to travel from there. Hmm, studying and travel seem to be contradicting desires for such a short time. 2 months is very little in India for a project like that.
What you could do is that you visit one particular Vaidiya (ayurvedic physician) in a hill station, stay with him for a while and see what he can offer you in terms of your desire to learn. I know one in Dehra Dun, for instance, he has a resort there, you could stay with him for say a week initially, and then decide from there what you want to do. In Dehra Dun you are close to the Himalayas, you could go to Mussoori if it gets too hot. I have a faint memory of having read that he arranges pick-ups from Delhi, since he runs a pancha-karma clinic. An advantage with him is that he is very well educated and speaks English well, which is not often the case with vaidiyas. He is famous for his cure for a type of leukemia, with a remedy which his father developed. You could do meditation in a meditation center in Dehra Dun itself, or go to Rishikesh for that purpose as well as for yoga, which is also not far. How does Dehra Dun sound? It is a 7-8 hour express train (Shatabdi) ride from Delhi. Easy to reach in a modern train. To avoid food-poisoning and other diseases prepare yourself carefully, reading many introductory threads here on Indiamike. 30 years ago you were exposed to mainly water-borne diseases which you can avoid nowadays fully, because of "clean" drinking-water available everywhere. |

Ayurveda Study
Thank you for your trouble to answer my questions. A hill station sounds a good idea. I would be happy just to go there and stay there as long as I could be transported there and back from an international airport. Apart from the airfare from New Zealand I would be happy to spend another $1500 for the three weeks. I know it is not long in India but I just want to go back for a short time to restore my confidence as I had such an awful time there before with illness. I think you are right that with the proper water bottles available now it is OK. Are you able to direct me to a website of the Dehra Dun Ayurveda place you spoke about? Also, I have discovered one called Jiva Institute near Delhi. They are good to communicate with by email and seem to have a very progressive place there where you can learn, do yoga, meditation and they will pick you up at Delhi and even take you out shopping. The prices are quite reasonable too. They say they have air conditioning as July would be very hot. Would I be able to stand this heat coming from New Zealand or is it out of the question?

Hello Jenny, and welcome to India Mike. I'm going to move your Thread into a more appropriate Forum which covers, Ayurveda, as well as Yoga etc. You might like to check around that forum as well for answers to some of your questions.
