Hello all, long time reader of India Mike but 1st post. I am moving to Kerala in October on my own - and starting with a 3-4 week trip around South India, starting with Bangalore - Mysore.
I have been studying Ashtanga for over a year and would love to study in Mysore (its birthplace), even if only for a few days. Has anyone had experience with a particular yogashala?? ATI is a little pricey for me and I can't afford to spend a whole month there - and since guru-ji has passed on I am not particularly attached to that school. Would appreciate any experience or advice!! I have looked at Mysore Mandala briefly.. |

Ashtanga Yoga Classes in Mysore
Hi, there Ive been to Mysore for the past two years doing yoga. I have found a wonderful teacher there who teaches his own Vinyasa Sequence that I prefer to Asthanga, though you need to enrol for a month with him, his name is Vinay Kumar, this is his website. Just in case you go back again to Mysore and have more time I highly recommend studying with him, though dont expect it to be easy! http://www.pranavashya.com/index.html
However, there is another Ashtanga Teacher in Mysore called Ajay Kumar (no relation to Vinay) who everyone who does Ashtanga raves about, and I think he does drop in classes. Here is his website: http://www.yogamysore.com/schedule.php The Mandala is ok, and is a nice place to eat and meet fellow yogi's. Shishadri was teaching there when I did Ashtanga there the year before last, but I think he had a falling out with Shantala the owner, and BNS has now started teaching there. So I cant comment on the teaching. You could just do drop in classes there last year, but I think they perfer you to do at least a week. Shantala, can also help find accommodation if you are staying a while and want to rent an apartment. They will probably answer your email soon. I would try Ajay first though for the yoga. Mysore is great, you will probably want to stay longer if you are interested in yoga. Im going back again for the third year running in December. Hopefully this helps a bit. Cheers Gia |
