Selimiye Mosque and its Social Complex, Edirne, Turkey

Edirne is a Turkish ciry within a half hour of the Bulgarian border and was the capital of the Ottoman Empire for a brief period before the capture of Constantinople. It's justly famed for the Selimiye Mosque, a 16th century masterpiece by the great Ottoman architect Sinan. He considered it his finest work (and there are many of his buildings still standing in Turkey). The mosque was built using Iznik tiles during the greatest period of artistry and quality in the tile production.

I was unable to get a good shot of the entire mosque from the outside, but you can see a photo at this link.

Historic City of Trogir, Croatia

Trogir is a step back in time to the idyllically medieval. It's street layout dates from the Greeks. Add in Romanesque churches, renaissance and baroque buildings from its period of subservience to the Venetian Republic, a coastal island setting devoid of cars and you have a perfect spot to relax and enjoy (at least before the summer tourist season starts).

Mont-Saint-Michel and its Bay, France

As a young boy growing up in the isolation of a small Minnesota prairie town, I discovered a book in the tiny school library with pictures of Mont-Saint-Michel. For some reason it made a vivid impression on me. As a teenager I played a piece on the piano by Debussy (La cathédrale engloutie), a piece based on an ancient Breton myth about a cathedral that rises up from the sea on a clear morning and from acroos the sea come the sounds of priests chanting, bells ringing, and the organ playing and then the church sinks back into the sea. When I played this piece, I always had that library book image of Mont-Saint-Michel in my mind.

Finally as a grey-haired man in his early 60s, I made the pilgrimage to the spot that had held such mystique for me in my childhood and youth. I suppose that I came away a bit disappointed, but only because my expectations had been crafted by fantasy rather than reality. Still, it is a true wonder, jutting up out of the sea from the flat expanse of coastline. As I stood in a cemetery in a small churchyard part-way up to the top, the bells of Mont-Saint-Michel began to ring. The reality suddenly turned into fantasy. The shivers ran down my back and the tears started to flow down my cheeks. I was suddenly a sandy-haired little boy again.

But, alas, the bells stopped and reality came rushing back in as I contemplated the distance yet to climb to reach the top.

Wow, that is some sterling work there David, thanks a lot for putting the effort in. To break it down by continent:

Europe (inc. Turkish Thrace): 41
Asia (inc. Middle East and Caucasus but exc. India): 38
India: 24
Africa: 10
Australasia: 2
North America: (inc. Central America + Caribbean): 10
South America: 6

So, Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa are still badly underrepresented on IM (and perhaps on the UNESCO list itself?), which is probably not surprising on a forum frequented by India-lovers. I'm surprised to find we haven't covered all of India's 30 sites yet. We are missing:

*Manas Wildlife Sanctuary
*Group of Monuments at Pattadakal
*Nanda Devi and Valley of Flowers National Parks
*Mountain Railways of India
*Mahabodhi Temple Complex at Bodh Gaya
*The Jantar Mantar, Jaipur

It would be very helpful if the stats and the index are on the first page, wouldnt it?
