Some important facts regarding Taratarini:
The mythological texts recognize four major Shakti Peethas: Tara Tarini (Stana Khanda), near Berhampur; Bimala (Pada Khanda) inside the Jagannath Temple (Puri); Kamakhya (Yoni khanda), near Guwahati; and Dakshina Kalika (Mukha khanda) in Kolkata. It is situated on Taratarini hill near Purusottampur, which is at a distance of 40 km. from Berhampur. Twin Goddess Tara and tarini are worshiped in the temple atop a hill.
a) River Rushikulya flows at the foot of the hill. The height of the hill is approximately 708ft. and the total area spreading over 180 Acres of land. There are 999 steps on the front side of the hill leading to the temple and also a pucca road for vehicles behind the hill facilitating devotees to reach the Pitha.
b)Special Rock Edit of Ashoka found at Samapa (modern Jaugada), the capital of Southern Kalinga of Ashokan Empire, at a mere distance of 4 Kms. From Tara-Tarini Hill.
We had spent some time at the bank of the Rishikulaya river, which is very close to the Panthanivas. Presently the Rock Edict at Jaugada is preserved by the A.S.I.
For booking of the Panthanivas at Taratarini, you may contact Tourist Officer at 0680-2210980

sumu, Balaka Lodge is an old one, well maintained but, rooms are small and bathrooms are not modern. The long narrow balcony in front, is a relief. Enjoy.

Henry's Island and Jambudeep are two different destinations- if you have enough time, you can visit both in two halves.

The beach near Henry's island is beautiful, but you have to walk sometimes...... and in this time it may be occupied by other tourists- so serenity and calmness- two major attractions there will be lesser.

Hire a boat for go and back to Jambudeep and spend some moments of your own there. Both the spot are tranquil - if you are fond of nature with it's tranquility and loneliness, you'll love them.

Rope way is functional? Kolkata Tourist office could not confirm.

Yes, Somenath, the Ropway connecting Tara Tarini hill top is very much functional. We had actually traveled by that Ropway year before last. We had made a day trip from Gopalpur-on-Sea to Tara Tarini, to Rambha & back to Gopalpur-on-Sea.

Thanks Asish Da for your reply. We want to stay there for at least a day. For everybody's information, Panthashala of Tara Tarini can be booked from Kolkata Utkal Tourism office.

Taki Details
This was my 2nd visit to Taki. I like the place a lot. I planned to visit during puja as thats the major attraction there (goddess immersion on both side of icchamati at east and west bengal). Puja reservation starts atleast 6 months in advance.

The best way to go to Taki is Hasnabad local from Sealdah (7:45 AM), it takes 2 hours 15 mins. Get down at Taki Road and take a van rickshaw to Taki.

The best hotel in the area is Taki Municipality Guest House (recently renovated) , Suhasini Guest House situated just on the banks of Ichamati. Others are Amrapali Guest House (lacks privacy due to presence of a BSF tower just infront of it) and Taki Tourist Bungalow (a little far of from the main place).

Water in Taki is not good, best to have Mineral water. Food at Municipality Guest House is good and they allow outsiders to dine in as well. There are number of shops at Taki (beside ichamati) where you can get breakfast, snacks, even dinner cooked (place order early).

The Taki municipality has given sincere efforts and you'll be astonished to see that most of the roads are well paved, place pretty clean with lots of dustbins placed at junctions. The bank (the main spot) is very beautifully maintained with good lighting and benches. A moon light night at Taki is superb.

They are few places for sight seeing, the Kali Mandir (believed to be 500 years old) and the Ramkrishna Misson. By Boat you can go to Machranga Island or even for a river cruise. The trips arranged by Taki Municipality.

This time though we opted to stay at a Bagan Bari which is around 2km away from Taki at a place called Saidpur (Sodepur). The bagan bari was too good, food awesome, ambience excellent, a small pond, a Shiva Mandir. The only problem it was far from river bank and the main town. But as it was our 2nd time and all sight seeings done in the 1st visit, the place was ideal for relaxing.

If going in winter, you will get GUR (jaggery). Try out the local delicacy MAPLOYA, its great. Personally I feel jaggery is the best at Bakkhali..

The name of the Taki Municipality Guest House is Nripendra Athithishala, situated right on the bank of Ichamati

Try this number: 03217-233328 or 9331026585

or visit Municipality's webpage at http://www.takimunicipality.in/contact.php

Just to add to Ashis da.. they seldom take booking over phone.. and insist that someone goes and book in person. BUT, if you have traveled earlier just refer that and they sometime take the booking (that too in a lean season). If this is a problem you can take booking from Subhasini (http://www.suhasiniguesthouse.com) who have a booking center in Kolkata and rooms are priced at 400 (Ground floor) , 500 (1st floor and 2nd Floor).. Insist on room nos 101-103 (G floor) 201-203 (1st Floor) and 301-303 (2nd floor)... these are facing the Ichamati..

Road Guidance – 2 to 3 Days trip from Kolkata

I am a Biker and Trekker from Kolkata and have been a biker since last 5 years throughout in India and have been
a traveler and Trekker since my childhood.

Everybody should stay at hotel Balaka Lodge ( Room No 201,202,203 or 305,306,307 , Contact No. 9800773449 )
And please do not go anywhere except the fooding option of Naran da ( 9732987147 or ask anybody for his hotel, it is 2 minutes from Balaka Lodge ). Just make an order to him whatever you are looking for with recipe or else buy anything from the market and take it to him with the recipe and he will just take the cooking charges for it and revert back to me with the taste of the recipe. I am telling you can compare it to the any good restaurant of Kolkata. Nobody else is there. If you want then you can take my reference, Prosant from Kolkata with his red colored Hero-Honda CBZ extreme. His recipe is awesome considering from Indian to Chinese. There is a person who drives his engine Van for travelling purposes. He is Lalu da ( 9932167284 ). I had been in Bakkhali and Henry Island at least for 30 times.

Here is the short trip report to your queries and I have been in the entire Hilly-forest region of West Bengal, Orissa, Jharkhand, South Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Andhrapradesh many times during the span of my biking.

FIRST OF ALL EVERYBODY SHOULD TAKE IT INTO THEIR MIND THAT DO NOT WORRY FOR ANY KIND OF MAOIST THREAT OR ROBBERY IN THIS ROUTE EVEN AFTER EVENING. THE ENTIRE JANGALMAHAL OF WEST BENGAL IS NO MORE MIOIST EFFECTED OR CAPTURED BY THE EXTREMIST. I have been travelling in this entire route since last 2 to 3 years. When I feel some exhausted then I run my bike towards Jangalmahal.

Being a biker, I had been almost entire region of Hilly-forest area of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Orissa, South Bihar, Andhrapradesh and some areas of Chattisgarh when Maoist thread was in its full range but I have never been to its own challenge but it is better to say that the Adivasis are always very helpful and kind by their own heart and you can not identify those extremist as because it is not mentioned on their forehead so we are nature lover as well as adventures people so we should only think about the nature and the concern matter of its protection.

I have crossed the entire described route from Jhilimili to Kolkata at night ( 3 pm – 5 am ) So, Don’t Worry !!!

This route is simply outstanding for making an awesome drive in any weekend. Try to take Saturday into your plan as it is a “ HUT Day ” in entire Jangalmahal and you can purchase the delicious Deshi Chicken/ Mutton ( Raw Meat ) along with other local vegetables from that local market.

You should start your journey from Kolkata sharp at 5:30 am. Here is the itinerary . . .

1st Day :

1. Kolkata to Kharagpur ( Chawrange Circle Kharagpur - NH 6 NH 60 & NH 6 Crossing )
Via NH 6 ( Total - 123 Km ) - Straight Road

2. Take right side on NH 60 to Bhadutala More ( Total 13 Km ) - Straight Road

3. Take left side from that Bhadutala More to Lalgarh ( SI Cahk Bus Stand ) after crossing Bhadutala Forest and Jhitki Forest Range via Lalgarh Medinipur Road ( Total 34 Km ) - Straight Road

4. When you will reach Lalgarh then you will see a Forest Office near by SI Cahk Bus Stand then
take straight road avoiding semi left side road. There you will see a river named Kankshabati and you have to cross that river via a Bamboo made bridge ( 2 & 4 Wheeler are accessible very comfortably ).

5. You have to cross the river and then you have to take the right side village road ( Initial road is made by red soil i.e. Moram ) towards Binpur. ( Total 6 Km. )

6. Go straight to Silda Market More ( Crossing of 3 roads ) followed by a verybeautiful forest called Malabati Forest – ( Total 21Km )

7. Then just take left side and then take right side towards Belpahari leaving Wine Shop at left hand. ( Total 7 Km )
8. You have to take right side from Belpahari Market and then take first left side road towards Bnaspahari ( Total 24 Km )

9. Then take right side road and go straight to Jhilimili Forest Office ( Total 3 Km )

10. Then take right side road leaving Forest Office at left hand towards Jhilimili Market. You will find a big size tree ( Batgach ) in the middle of the road at market. Then take left side road from there towards Jhilimily School and you will find a 2 storied big picturesque Forest Bungalow ( Rimil Lodge owned by Mr. Bablu, A very rich and renowned businessman in Khatra - Jhilimil region and his contact No. is 9434202485 ) at the top of the hill surrounding by a beautiful forest range ( Sal, Segun, Mahua, Sirish, Sishu tree ).

And what Enjoy the Deshi Chicken with . . . if you . . .

2nd Day :

1. Go for an outing in Talbere Forest Range ( 8 Km form there ), Ask Anyone there but move very early in the morning because my travel plan needs to get it earlier or you can avoid it but it would be real jungle suffer and very few people are aware about this route.

2. Move out from the lodge and take the roads towards Ranibnadh and Khatra via Bnakura Road followed by the great 12 mile Forest Range ( Called “Baro Miler Jungle” ). You will be passing through the top of the several hillocks with dense hilly-forest and sharp ravine at the both side of the road.
Rimil Lodge ( Jhilimili ) – Ranibnadh ( Total 21 Km )

3. Then you need to take left side road just after moving say around 13 Km from Ranibandh towards Mukutmnanipur Dam. It will take you for another 8 Km on that road to reach at the dam. ( Total 21 Km )

4. Move out from there after refreshing in the fresh air and then pushing off from there to Khatra ( Total 16 Km ).

5. You will see that there is a crossing of 3 roads. You have to take the right hand side straight road towards Simlipala just crossing the Simlapala Forest Range. When you will be passing through that route then you will see that there is a narrow concrete river bridge and you have to take the left side road to reach Simlapala Market. ( Total 27 Km ).

6. Go straight to Sibdanga after crossing Taldanga Market. Sibdanga is a very small place with 3 to 4 small Pan and other shops so be careful so that you will not cross that place by mistake. It is 2 Km from Taldnaga Market and it is a very big market. You will find a 4 lane crossing after passing through Taldanga. That is Sibdanga. ( Simlipala to Sibdanga : Total 14 Km ).

7. Take right side straight road towards Bishnupur Nursing home More on NH 60 followed by Bishnupur Forest Range. You will fall on NH 60. ( Total 24 Km )

8. You have to take left side road on NH60 towards Bishnupur Bypass. You need to run say about 2 Km on NH60 then you will see a wide road is going towards left side cutting from NH60. You have to take that route towards Bishnupur – Arambagh road and the famous Jaipur Forest Range.

The Bishnupur – Arambagh road up to Kotulpur is awesome and then it is unforgettable for any driver up to Dankuni or Kona Expressway. The road is made by butter up to the end point of Jaipur forest and you can compare it by any high raod of western countries but then also you can not compare it by country. It is horrible to the power infinity after Kotulpur.

If you want you can stay in the Jaipur forest or Bishnupur Forest where I think the following options are available though I never stayed in anyone of it.

Joypur Forest Bungalow (DFO, Panchyat Division: 03244-252189)

Bakadaha Forest Bungalow (DFO, Panchyat Division: 03244-252189)

Bishnupur Forest Bungalow (DFO, Panchyat Division: 03244-252189)

3rd Day :

1. Now you have to take Bishnupur Bypass and Bishnupur – Arambagh road towards Kolkata followed by Kotulpur, Dankuni OR Kona Expressway. It is almost straight road. Ask anyone. ( Total 128 Km )

OR you can merge your 3rd Day into your 2nd Day and you will reach Kolkata at midnight though it will be very difficult to ride on my described Arambagh road. If you can then it is OK.

Important Tips :

1 . Do not try to cross Bishnupur Forest Range ( Sibdanga to Nursing Home More – 24 Km ) Jaipur Forest Range ( 14 Km ) after vevening by any means whatever it would be the condition. It is also applicable fro Malabati Forest Range also though you will be passing through it at noon.

2. Entire route is awesome apart from the roads from Kotulpur to Kona Expressway.

3. 1st Day will take 7 to 8 Hrs. including all breakfast, lunch, tea sightseeing. ( 5 am to 1 pm )

4. 2nd Day will take 4 Hrs max. apart from the timing for sightseeing

5. 3rd Day will take 4 Hrs.

6. Breakfast at the hotel which is the 2nd left side big hotel on NH6 just after crossing the Kolaghat bridge.

7. You have to pack the lunch either at Kharagpur or Medinipur site or at Jhilimili otherwise you have to fight for lunch as because of the poor food serve other places.

8. At jhilimili, try to purchase the Veg or Deshi chicken from local house or market and make it from a person who is having a hotel in Jhilimili, a real awesome chef. Do not go to anywhere even don’t take any meal including breakfast from Lodge or other places. Just make a call to Balai da ( 9434244166 ) and make your awesome food from there. Take my reference.

9. On 2nd day, pack your lunch from Balai da after doing breakfast from there if you want spend your noon at Mukutmanipur. Otherwise you can avail a awesome Bengali food with Sonamug Dal, Alupasta, Begun Bhaja and Mutton or Deshi Ruhi Fish at the restaurant which is at the right hand after crossing the Taldanga Market. When you will cross the market then you will see a onsite Wine Shop at the left hand side of the road and the restaurant is just opposite of it. Then take your dinner at the forest house or the right side posh Dhaba after crossing the Jaipur Forest.

10. If you are passionate for liquor in Jangal then it is before Bhadutala Forest then Lalgarh, Silda ( All the top brands are available ), Ranibnadh, Khatra, Taldnaga, Bishnupur and so on . . .

Be careful while taking liquor in Jhilimili as because of the restriction has been imposed by the STF for tourist also in outside though you can have it in your room or within the premises.

11. Bike reparing centre at Medinipur, Binpur, Silda, Jhilimili, Khatra, Taldanga and Bishnupur and so on.

12. Must carry all the papers of Bike along with your ID card. You will be checked by the STFs several time during this biking.

OR

If you are looking for any another route then go through the following route and select anyone and revert back to me though all the seniors are there with their thrilling experiences :

1. Deul & Velki-Machan Forestry at Durgapur & Mankar in burdwan.
2. Baghmundi ( Hilly-Forest ) in Purulia.
3. Mukutmanipur & Jhilmili ( Hilly-Forest & River ) via Bishnupur in Bankura
4. Henry Islad ( Mangrove forest with Sea beach ) beside Bakkhali beach.
5. Shantiniketan - Dubrajpur & Hetampur ( Sonajhuri & Sal, Piyal Forest & many historical rajbari )

7. Maithan Dam ( Lake, Hilly-forest, Dam )
8. Deogarh ( Hilly-Forest, Temple )

BUT IF YOU WANT TO TAKE MY SUGGESTION THEN IT SHOULD BE

OR

12. Kharagpur - Salbani - Chandrokona Road - Piyalsal - Sarenga - Raipur - Ranibnadh - Jhilmil ( 1st Night Stay ) - Bundwan - Duarsini - Galudih – Tata – Chandil Dam ( Sightseeing ) – Dasam Falls ( Sightseeing ) - Ranchi ( 2nd Night Stay ) – Hudru Falls ( Sightseeing ) – Moori – Jhalda – Baghmundi – Ajodhya Pahar including High Dam ( Sightseeing ) – Balarampur – Purulia ( 3rd Night Stay ) - Bankura – Sonamukhi – Bardhaman ( NH 2 ) – Kolkata [ Entite areas are covered with dense forest, high hills, flora & fauna, wild life, tribals, water falls, national sanctuary, sea beaches etc.]
