Want to settle down in North Bengal / Doars
Dear freinds,
I am looking for suggestions for a suitable place to settle down in north bengal or doars area on a long term. Will appreciate comments from any member living in north bengal. Currently I am living in Pune, but planning to move to Bengal sometime in future. Thanks Rajib Last edited by rajib_sengupta : Apr 29th, 2009 at 15:42. Reason: Spelling |

"Doars" is a nice place to Travel, but not
for settling in, clashes between different ethnic groups are very common, there were so many flare ups during last couple of months, which forced some long time settlers to the Plains. "Siliguri" is not a bad Idea, Its a growing up city with lot of upcoming housing projects from reputed groups like " Ambuja" . Cheers

Settling down in NB
Hi Rajib
No place is safe now a days. You can expect disturbance at any place. People are still staying here & also coming from out side WB to settle down. NB is a nice place. You can try places like Chalsa,Mal Bazar. These places are not far off from Siliguri & also developing. Welcome to WB. Rgds....Surajeet. |

Thanks Surajeet. This is hight time people spread across the entire state instead of concentrating in a single city of Kolkata.
There is more to Bengal apart from just Kolkata. Rajib |

Dooars, Kalimpong, Kurseong, Sikkim ... there are so many beautiful places . Is it not possible to find a place there ? any suggestion ?

Brishti,
Although you might get a "Mausam-Bhiga bhiga " in Digha , but that hardly fits the bill.Neither does Dumdum !! :- ) But seriously Himalayas is just so near us "Megh korlei ichhe korey train ta dhorey feli...." Isn't there any way to run far from this madding crowd of Kolkata & just enjoy the hills & Relax ? |

How about Jalpaiguri(NOT New Jalpiguri)?Situated on the western bank of Teesta, Just 40 min drive from Silliguri. It is Very close to the heart of Dooars, almost all modern facilities available, nice weather, very peaceful, nice people, good connectivity with Kolkata(direct)/other major cities of India(via Silliguri/NJP),friendly to your pocket and many more...

Santanu, Dooars is not only about hills. It has its own charm in jungles, rivers, panoramic view of distant hills, tea gardens, a unique culture, serenity. If you are a bengali then I would suggest you to read some of the Samaresh Majumdar literature to get more idea about this unique place. Another must read creation is 'Teesta Parer Brittanto' by Devesh Ray. A few movies like 'Mr. and Mrs. Iyer', 'Dekha', 'Abar Aranye' can also give you a good idea about Dooars.
Now, talking about Jalpaiguri town, it is the district headquarter of Jalpaiguri district. just 50 km away from Gorumara N.P., Surrounded by Tea gardens. Definitely Jalpaiguri itself is not a tourist place, but if you want to settle down somewhere you'll need some basic/advanced amenities. This place place is the best choice then. Jalpaiguri is a twin town of Silliguri, almost all the hill stations are equidistant from Jalpaiguri and Silliguri. Some are even closer. For better reference about Jalpaiguri please see the map of Dooars posted in some thread here. |

I did not think much of the follow up to Days and Nights in the Forest. Please would you be kind enough to post in English and well as in Bengali? Thanks.
This is the link to the map of the Dooars: http://www.indiamike.com/photopost/s...ser/13330/sl/c which is - unfortunately - only in Bengali!
