Unrest in Darjeeling area
Apparently there is quite a stir right now concerning the proposed sixth schedule designation for Nepalis. There have been major demonstrations, and I understand that a much larger one is planned for the school winter break which is coming soon. Apparently they are opposing sixth schedule, demanding nothing less than an autonomous state. I cannot find much about it in the news, and I have heard conflicting overviews here in Darjeeling, and I was wondering if any forum members had any comments to help illuminate the subject.

No info I am afraid - my hubby phoned this morning from Siliguri, having spent the past two days around Darjeeling and Mirik and didnt mention any agitation. that doesn't mean there isnt any.............. , however it also shows that transportation wasn't disrupted.
i have heard about the sixth schedule designation and know it is a hot topic - will let you know if i hear anything and will ask hubby. |

Hi
When i was in darjeeling in 06 june i had an elderly gentle man as my driver who was a thorough gentleman !! but there was one thing when he spoke about nepal and india he used to speak very highly of the nepalese govt and the rules there not that he used to degrade india or anything as such but used to make it a point that almost everybody from darjeeling is of nepali origin and it was the british who wanted to grow tea in it s hill slope s and make it a profitable trade hence they cut of darjeeling and included it into india !!! It was his favourite o blame the local govt and even praise the working of the british govt he was apparently schooling during brirtish raaj !!! YES it was equally difficult to understand what he desired as is my post ![]() |

hey ...i dont want to scare you all but its better to take precaution...the council of darjeeling has supressed people for long i guess so the 6 th schedule was just a pinch that started the issue, looks like this might turn into agitation which the hill suffered in the 1986,and we too fear the same old story might be repeated....cannot confirm but thats what we have heard...the opposition are taking out rallies in all parts of darjeeling, please check the situation and then go ...

quick update...
the town was shut down with strikes for six days, and only police escorted jeeps were available to leave town if you had a train or plane ticket. yesterday everything was open again and back to normal. for how long, nobody can say. on the up side, it was nice to walk down hill cart rd. without a car in sight. |
