TRIP TO BISHNUPUR, West Bengal - 2012

When people visits several places of historical interests and are delighted to see temples, masjids, churches with their gothic architectures made on stones, marbles ,wood in different distant places of India, the nearby BISHNUPUR (5 hours journey from Kolkata where all this is made on BURNT SOIL(Terracotta) is left behind to visit next time. But, this next time never comes and often this Place is ignored.

How many of us is known about terracotta architecture ? Imagine, the temples with its superb design and style made by terracotta mode was made as back as 450-500 years back and still standing as new. Please go and watch with your own eyes and you would be proud of this your own country’s wealth.

Terracotta is characteristic of Bishnupur. Apart from the temples, terracotta pottery, artifacts and even jewelery made in this very traditional material is famous.

The 16th-century temples are the excellent examples of brick made architecture with burnt soil work on it of the Bengali style and are covered by ornate terracotta tiles that depict scenes from the Hindu epics.

Bishnupur is a town in Bankura District in the state of West Bengal, India. We in the month of October 2012 went to Bishnupur from Mukutmanipur in our 4 days trip. We planned to travel by local transport. From our SONAJHURI RESORT of Mukutmanipur we walked around 1 km to the local bus stand and took bus up to Khatra the nearest town from Mukutmanipur. From Khatra within time interval of 2-3 hrs buses goes to Bishnupur. We took a local bus and traveled up to Bishnupur it took around 3 hrs, traveling through all small villages and many small towns.

Bishnupur could be reached from Kolkata through Rupasi Bangla Express leaving at morning / Aranyak Express leaving at evening. After reaching Bankura by local transport (bus/minibus/taxi) Bishnupur is 25 km away.

Though we have visited the place in one morning small trip, it is suggested that a full day or more could be kept staying one night at Bishnupur at available local hotels of almost all budget.

In Bishnupur for local sightseeing there are plenty of Autos, Rickshaws and Taxis. As we were 2 people we took Auto, Auto driver was a young boy with full knowledge of History of Bishnupur. While arranging for local sighseeing one should see that the driver is knowledgeable of the places as guides are hardly available locally.

Some of the snaps are here to give you an idea.
