can anyone advise me of a simple means to get to Bakkhali - I plan to stay at or near Howrah rail head - would also appreciate tips on hotel accommodation and things to do near and from Bakkhali - sorry if this info may already be on another forum - I have seen some remarks but not enough info - many thanks and 'g'day mate' (to be aussie!)

The easiest way to reach Bakkhali from Kolkata is to take the WBSTC bus (apart from personal/rented car) from Esplanade main bus stand. There are two buses daily to Bakkhali an they start, most probably, at 7-00 and 7-30 in the morning. The journey roughly takes 4.5-5 hours and the same buses starts from there for the return journey at 1-30 and 2-00 PM respectively.

There are three major options for staying. In Bakkhali, Frasergunj and Henry's Island and each of them has its own pros and cons. Bakkhali has the largest number of hotels near the beach but a bit crowdy and personally I didn't like it too much. Frasergunj (2km before Bakkhali towards Kolkata) offers lesser accommodation option but also more enjoyable and quiet. Henry's island (around 4 km or so from Bakkhali and can be reached by car and/or cycle rickshaw) has only limited government accommodation but very much secluded and ideal for a leisurely weekend break.

Biman is correct. I would prefer Frasergunj. Take the bus from Esplande. Come a little early, around 6 a.m.
....life is a journey.....and the journey is more important than the destination........

Thumbs up now having nightmare getting rail bookings - whew ! tiring

Thanks for all the good info thanks - could you add your (obvious) experience and expertise to address another problem I have? look across to my other post - second ever - about IRCTC which seems now to refuse international credit cards - any tips?

I am not in india yet but I already feel as if I am (have been there 2ce so not a total newbie)

The info on bakkhali and nearby places was excellent - many thanks
