You may opt for Rajabhatkhawa in North Bengal. I doubt if there will be much trouble during the Pujas, and even if sporadic demonstrations are held, Rajabhatkhawa (10km by road from Alipurduar Jn) should remain unaffected.
For 5-6 days, it's a fantastic place to stay, at the doorsteps of Buxa Tiger Reserve. The place is calm and quiet and the sprawling Rajabhatkhawa [RBK] Jungle Lodge of the West Bengal Forest Development Corporation is really the place to unwind. I was there in May, and double-bed rooms were priced at INR 800, while 4-bed dorms [with attached bath] came at INR 1200. The lodge is absolutely spic & span [for a sarkari lodge they have Jaquar bath fittings, Saint Gobain glass in mirrors and La Opala crockery ] and meals [per day/per person] would set you back by INR 120-150 depending on your choice. From RBK you can go to Buxa Tiger Reserve, Jayanti, Bhutan Ghat, Buxa Fort [it's a short but sharp trek], Phuentsholing [buy India-made wines cheaply from Tashi Commercial Corp ]...If you need further info PM me.

Yes. Shillong is really a good option. Otherwise you can try some parts of MP - Khajuraho, Bandhavgarh, Panchmari (hill station), Jabalpur, Amarkantak (if possible).
If Shillong is decided, PM me, i can give you a very comprehensive itinerary that will fit into the puja vacation. |
