I think the people who come to India for drugs get what they deserve. Get off the habit or, do it in your country. Don't come to India for it. We do not need these kinds of tourists.

Cheers

Coming to a foreign country specifically to break the law (in ways that affect others - not talking about the occasional motorbike without a license) always seemed like the most egregious form of neocolonialism to me. If you want to break yr own laws at home, that's one thing....Whether or not the laws are just is another question.

However, all the folks in the article were not breaking the laws, doing drugs or whatever.

300 for a dorm?? Is that supposed to be CHEAP?? crikey.

It certainly sounds as if quite a few of the 'tourists' are as undesirable as the local criminals!

But also, as Sirensongs says, there are innocent people who become victims too.

What people should know is whether this is journalistic sensationalism --- or a true portrait of an area people may otherwise be heading for.

I would suggest that tourists who aren't after the shadier pleasures in life stay away from areas which are, err, shady.

Even if you end up paying a couple of hundred rupees more for accomodation.

Makes sense to me.

I don't know... just get some shady area established --- drugs, prostitution, whatever --- and along come some nasty criminals to spoil it all. What is the world coming to?

"Cheap hotels are the main draw — dorm beds are available at Rs 200 to Rs 300, rooms below Rs 900. "

if the rest of this article is as acurate as these figures than you can write it all off as a bunch of hogwash.

well the drug addicts{tourists} are the main problem here

if they didn`t come in this area and any area around the world the dealers would not have clients to sell their stuff, therefore they spoil the whole area of cheap accommodation & cause problems to the rest of us who don`t make use of the drugs

Thumbs up

Thank heaven i try my utmost to stay away from tourist areas. I have enough idiots smoking giggleweed in my home town, I don't need to travel 11,000 kms to meet more.
Sorry, it's not very compassionate, I know.
But the first guy in the "article", a man who's wife won't share a room with him because of his drug taking , and then he wants to find a prostitute.
What a catch he'd be.
I bet that's a happy marriage.

Journalistic sensationalism in my opinion. I was in the area this past March and found it to be about the same as any other tourist area, actually, to some extent a bit more pleasureable in that I not approached by touts and people trying to sell me stuff as often as say, in Delhi. Also, it is not all cheap flophouses in the area as the article seems so quick to point out. The Fairlawn is on this street, as are other more upmarket places so I don't think it's fair the paint the area as shady. I bet last night there were a few thefts and drug deals on the streets in my quiet, safe city. Someone had a wallet stolen...this is hardly newsworthy in any other city. I think that this article just adds to people's fear travel in India. I agree that the figures for accommodation are way off, and therefore, one can assume that this isn't a particularly well-researched piece.

What kind of journalism is this? "Package Deal" with prizes of stay, sex and drugs.... every bigger city has its drug area, mostly not even a shady area, often in the centres. Mostly clients have a feeling for the dealers and vice versa, and "normal" ppl simply don't see them. Wallet snatching and all these things are happening everywhere around the globe, it's sad, but nothing really special....

those out to find illegal pursuits will generally find them, and not just in the seedier haunts.

inasmuch as your thread title specifically mentions sudder street, i'll add that my 3-day stay at the fairlawn on sudder street was idyllic, with several good options within a block for 'net access and decent food (though meals were included at the fairlawn). i didn't notice and surely didn't tap into the drug scene or other unsavory past-times. then again, i wasn't looking for them. never felt unsafe, either. it's generally well lit and well-populated. the taxi drivers i encountered/engaged there, however, were incorrigiblly dishonest.
