Scam on the fare from Silguri ->NJP

I keep reading in travel books and on the internet that the fare in an auto is Rs 10 from Silguri bus stand to NJP station.

I was there a month back returning from a hiking trip and when my jeep dropped me at Silguri jeep stand, autos quoted RIDICULOUS fare for the 5 km jaunt - one guy told me Rs 90!! All others told me amounts well over Rs 50. I kept telling them that I wont pay more than Rs10.
They told me Rs10 for a shared auto which people use to commute. However you cannot put your suitcase/backpack on those autos, unlike long distance shared jeeps.
Can someone enlighten how much you should pay for this 5km trip on a 2 seater auto???
(Ultimately I took a cycle rickshaw for the 20 min/5 km trip - I paid him Rs20).

Are the guidebooks wrong??

my 2 pence

1)fare for completely booking an auto for 5 km should be around 20-25 rupees depending on various factors

2)if fare for each person in shared auto is Rs.10/-, completely booking it for same distance should be at least 10*4=Rs.40

Yes... 5km trip in an individually hired auto(not shared auto) cannot be as low as Rs10.

Rs10 would be the fare per person in shared auto.

guess siliguri has become bad like chennai.when they see with large bags these charge hell a lot.but dont expect 5 km travel for Rs 10.in chennai minimum is 14 for 1 km and every kilometer after that is rs 6 .rs 40-50 is the charge.better they should use meters.
