i am planning to go to sandakphu 2011 september last week with my papa, mom, wife and child. i am planning to book a car from manebhanjan for 7 days. though i found that only land rovers are available in that route from the syndicate. my dad is around 75, mom is 70 and my child is now 4. can anyone tell me whether it will be risky to plan sandakphu with them ? my tour plan is given below:

day 1 : manebhanjan
day 2 : tumling
day 3 : sandakphu
day 4 : sandakphu (may be phalut by car if health permits)
day 5 : sandakphu
day 6 : tonglu
day 7 : manebhanjan

will it be very risky for those old fellows or the child? can anyone give me any idea?

thanx

The car route to Sandakphu is very rough and steep. For your parents it might be tiring. But if they both are very fit then its fine i guess. For the kid,its perfectly okay.

Sandakphu-Phalut in 5 days.... is it possible??

Hi All,

This is my first post to IM; though I check the forums almost regularly!!!

We are planning a trip to Sandakphu-Phalut in December 1st week. I've gone through different forums (on this topic) & have gathered a lot of information. But I've some specific questions & hence giving below the itinerary that I'm thinking of.
Day1 - night stay at Manebhanjan
Day2 - reach Sandakphu by car (I know this is not a very good option; but do not have much options because of limited holidays!!! )
Day3 - trek to Phalut & stay there
Day4 - trek to Gorkey & stay there
Day5 - return to NJP through Hille-Jorthang route

Now my doubts\questions are -
1) is it feasible to reach NJP (from Gorkey) in a single day? We can go for reserved-car if required.
2) can this trip be arranged in December 1st week? We are amature trekkers; have done few light treks.

Any help\suggestions would be very much helpful.

Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Bubai

@ Bubai: It's next to impossible task.. if you have planned to trek downhill from Gorkey via Shrikhola to Rimbik and go to NJP in a same day. You'll not get any bus from rimbik after dusk. It'll be difficult to get even a reserved jeep in the evening.

Hi Sabyasachi,

Thanks a lot for your reply.
Actually I'm planning to come down to NJP in a different path. From Gorkey to Bhareng (sikkim). I've heard we will get car at Bhareng; so from there to Jorthang or directly NJP.
I'm not getting any map for this route. Also, not sure if this is a feasible one or not.

Regards,
Saptarshi

No problem Sabyasachi.... thanks a lot for your reply!!
As per the information I've gathered, I think it would be too risky to try this route.... probably I would go for the traditional route only

Visit to Sandakphu and Phalut in November, 2011

Hi All

This my first post also. I have a plan to go to Sandakphu and Phalut in the last week of November. Due to time costraint we can't choose the trekking option. My tour plan is

Day 1(26th November) From New Jalpaiguri Reach Sandakphu Via Manebhanjan(By Car).
Day 2(27th November) Staying at Sandakphu.
Day 3(28th November) Early Morning Sandakphu to Phalut(By Car).
Day 4(29th November) Phalut to Darjeeling via Manebhanjan and Nightstay(By Car).

Now I have a few questions.
1. Is it possible to reach Sandakphu from NJP on the same day when no car booking is not in place.
2. Is it possible to reach Darjeeling on the same day from Phalut when no car booking is not there.
3. On November last week is it possible to reach Phalut by car?
4. If we don't book trekkers hut before trip, can we get accommodation somewhere in Sandakphu and Phalut?
5. What is the time takes from and to the destication by car.
From To
a) Maneybhanjan Sandakphu
b) Sandakphu Phalut
c) Phalut Sandakphu
d) Sandakphu Maneybhanjan
e) Maneybhanjan Darjeeling

Thanks in advance.

@somtirthaghosh,

Noo, I cancelled my plan. Actually some of experienced fellows told me, not to take any risk with those old fellows, as both of them are not very fit. Actually I gone there at the year 92, that time sandakphu, and falut was a real tough trek. Atleast, my route was a very tough one, as I completed that route with a reverse way, i.e., rimbik, srikhola, sandakphu, phalut, gairibus, manebhanjan. My dream at that time was to share that place with my dad. I have gone many a place with my parents, but sandakphu was not in any plan. For last couple of years, I heard that Car is going to Sandakphu. Thats why I tried a plan there with car, with my parents. But I think, its too late, they are not eligible to go there now a days, as both of them are not very fit. This year also I am going to north bengal at October. Probably this year also Sandakphu will not be in my tour plan

However, thanx for your post :-)
Happy travel

Your plan was really good. Something different than most of the common travellers. The concept of driving to Sandhakphu always thrills me but unfortunately I do not own a 4X4 vehicle. And this is a must to reach Sandhakphu.
However, careful planning is required if you have elderly people on board of your car.
