Hi,

I am planning a short trip to North Bengal with my wife in April 2014. This will be our first outing together. However, it has to be very short, 3-4 days max. I have seen different posts from several IMers on different places in the North Bengal. However, it would be great if you can do the trouble and come up with a few suggestions of places that I can visit. Here is what I am looking for:

1. We are looking for a calm and 'off-beat' place. With just a few days in hand, we probably can't indulge in a lot of activities (we are not insanely fit!). But a few places to see nearby can be managed (if they are manageable, that is).

2. Since I will be traveling with my wife, I will need a good accommodation. By good, I mean a place where I can get the basic amenities. Luxury is not at all our priority. We are visiting the place to see and explore it, and not to relax in the hotel rooms.

3. Finally, what I am expecting is a list of few places from which we can choose one (For, we won't have time to travel from one location to the other). I would like your personal recommendations and suggestion in choosing the best place.

4. It would be great if you share the reason why you are recommending it. (for example: natural beauty, wildlife etc.), travel details (links to other sites/posts will do), and of course, the cost (We don't have thousands of spend!!!)

I have asked a few questions before and this forum has always replied with personal warmth and fellowship, something which is a very rare trait today. And I know that you will help me out once again.

1.ICHCHEGAON/SILLERYGAON-PEDONG-RESHIKHOLA CIRCUIT[View of Kanchanjangha/Light trekking option/Natural Beauty]

2.SAMSING/SUNTALEYKHOLA-ROCKY ISLAND-JHALONG BINDU-MURTI CIRCUIT[Natural Beauty/Wildlife]--In Suntaleykhola I personally would recommend to stay in LISA HOMESTAY(if you don't have the fascination to stay at WBTDC accomodations)--Cheaper and nicer accommodation with Homely Warmth.Ofcouse alongwith basic amenities.

3.JAYANTI/RAJABHATKHAWA-CHILAPATA-JALDAPARA CIRCUIT[Offbeat wildlife]

Thanks Chaka for such a prompt response. After a little bit of research, I think we found the Sillerygaon circuit very appealing!!! Any tip regarding this (or any other site mentioned here) will be great.

In the meanwhile, I will wait for other IMers too!!!

Hello Joydtraveller,
Sillery Gaon is very beautiful and the entire circuit is serene and far away from the hustle bustle of urban boom. But the time you have chosen is not ideal to visit Sillery circuit as the main beauty of that part is Mt. Khangchendzonga and other snow ranges, which is predicted 90% to be behind clouds. Also the staying option is very basic as these are basically Homestays.
My suggestion would be Kalimpong Morgan House and Jorpokhri guest House.
If by Kalimpong you are envisaging the ever-crowded colourless congested backdrop of the Kalimpong town, let me tell you that the real picture at the Morgan House is actually the opposite. It is outside the main town, yet not very far, hardly 15 minutes drive from the Kalimpong Mall (So do they call it). But it is very green, serene, apposite a greener Army Barrack and far from the maddening crowd. From the staying point of view, it is possibly the best Government property in whole West Bengal (WBTDC). If suits in your budget, take the biggest room (Rs. 2300/- per night) as it is the best, suggesting as you will be touring for the first time with your wife. Other rooms are also good. Service, food are also good. But the best part is the location. On a clear day, Khangchenzonga is easily visible and it is situated on the top of the Kalimpong hills.
Regarding Jorpokhri, it is situated amidst the Singalila National Forest, so you can imagine. The DGHC cottege is really beautiful and surrounded by deep dense forest (But dont imagine as deep as the Dooars ).
You can go through my travelogue in the below link to have a detailed idea about most of the places you have a plan for. Rest is your decision depending on which place you like most.

I would second Bias_Traveller for not choosing Sillery Gaon, during April. You would definitely miss the charm of the location. Jorpokhri is on my radar too by the next chance of travel to North Bengal. March-April is the season for Rhododendrons.

I would definitely agree with BT and BW regarding the point of Mt.K view.but in the same time i wonder that that nature and beauty is not our hand's.one has to wait or come time and again to reveal their secrets.both of you BT/BW were unable to reach the feat although you have been to the viewing zones(Mt.K) in proper time. What i want to say is that it is HE who decides what one can see there.else go by the experience/probability.My best wishes.

Hi All,

Thanks so much for your replies and suggestions. Of late, someone suggested me to try Suntalekhola. So, any suggestion or idea on that?
