Murshidabad (Sundarpur)

My father wants to go his birthplace Murshidabad (Sundarpur village Near Pastupi) from where he came Bangladesh more than 40 years ago.

Can anyone give some info how to go Murshibabad? How to go Sundrpur?

Any help appreciated.

The railways station for Murshidabad is Azimganj at the the other side of Ganga river, you need to cross the river. Also by bus is easy to reach Murshidabad, neverthelesss more of the bus go to Berhampore.

Murshidabad is a great place to visit "Off the beaten trails".

There is a direct bus (Calcutta State Transport Corporation)from Esplanade(Kolkata) to Panchthupi.Otherwise you can go to Berhampore(bus in every 10 minutes).From there you will get bus for Panchthupi via Kandi.

There's also a day train to/from Kolkata that stops at Khagraghat Road outside Berhampore - about 15 mins in a taxi from Berhampore to the station. It's an excellent train.

Murshidabad can be best visited by Hazarduari Express (13113 Up) from Calcutta. It leaves Kolkata/Chitpur station at 6-50 in the morning and reaches Murshidabad at 11-28 (stops for 5 minutes). It comes back to Kolkata station at 21-25 hrs leaving Murshidabad at 16-35 hours. The train has total 10 stops on its journey between Kolkata and Lalgola (2 more stations from Murshidabad, 50 minutes journey). Once (2011, January) we stayed there Hotel Indrajit, just two minutes walk from Murshidabad Station, 5 minutes to Hazarduari by tonga. The hotel is a good budget hotel (Rs400 to Rs 750),the restaurant serves the best food in whole Murshidabad and Baharampur. Hotel Manjusha, on the bank of the river is location wise quite good , close to the main tourist attraction Hazarduari also. But there is no other good hotel close to Hazarduari beside this two; at least I haven’t found any. So be cautious before you book any blindly.

Hotel Manjusha is also sited beautifully on the banks of the Hoohgly, and there are plenty of river view rooms with balconies. The southernmost riverfront room on the upper floor has a view of some of Hazarduari Palace as well as the river from the balcony.

Note however that the rooms are very small, cold water only in the en suite bathroom, and no a/c. The hotel is also veg. The owner is an uncommonly pleasant and helpful man, himself quite a traveler. And the staff are extremely helpful and friendly.

I thoroughly enjoyed our one night there. distaff was a good sport about it, but I think it's just as well that I didn't ask her to stay a second night.
