Mangoes in season?
I love mangoes. I will be in West Bengal from about the 22nd of Jan to the 25th of Feb. Will mangoes be in season (available)?

I can still find some on the streets in Bangkok. Amazing that there are still some around. Also in some supermarkets but very expensive.

You get them round the year here too, but we are talking about season. And yes they are super expensive compared to the season.

Unfortunately, the worst season for tourist travel (when it is terribly hot) is the best season for mangoes
. They usually show up in my area around mid March or April. |

The best mangoes are the rathnagiri alphones which arrive during mid march or first week of april and the the mangoes will last somewhere upto september, the last being the neelam's from andra.

You are making my mouth water. I will try to track down some mangos tomorrow if the revolution here doesn't spread to the streets.

Oh yum!
You are making me hungry too. By the time monsoon season starts I swear I never want to see another mango again but then summer comes around just in time for me to keep from going mad from not having mangoes ! After the rather sad pesticide tasting apple I just had, a mango sounds heavenly. |

Come to Calcutta in the summers to taste "Him-sagor" mangoes - they are just so delicious.

Hi mousourik,
I havent tasted the mangaoes what your talking. I have tried all the mangoes like apusa, badami, raspuri, beganpalli, malgoba, nellam, langada, sindoor and my favourite one malliga etc, etc, I buy these mangoes in the bangalore mango market (i feel the biggest) raw one's and I buy some rice hay(dry ) and ripe it in my home. I never buy a wripe mangoe's from the market as they use carbon to get the colour. |

I am so sad that I have come to India in winter - thereby missing mango season in India AND Australia...very unwise decision.

Hi all,
I fortunately live in an area of Bedford, UK, surrounded by Temples, Mosques, Asian shops etc and as soon as the mango season starts all the local shops, including one not more than 20 yards from my house, have huge deliveries of all the best mangos. They usually cost about £3-£4 depending on size per box of four or five. What a difference to the hard red and green things called mangos available all year round in the supermarkets (Tesco etc) and cost anuthing up to £2 each. My brother-in-law grew up in S. Africa and I have to take him some evry few weeks before the season ends, (I also get fed by my sister in return) a round trip of 250 miles. He always complained about the terrible mangos from the supermarkets (Morrisons in his case). I usually get through a box per week without being too greedy. Happy New Year everyone. Bill |
