"Cheap" and "English-speaking" don't go together as far as Calcutta cabbies are concerned. If you want an English-speaking driver you will have to rent a car for the day - costs about Rs 900.

Instead, try the Metro. It will take you fairly close to most of the places you would like to see. It is crowded during rush hours, but journeys will be short and the weather will be cool, so it will not be horrid.

Dear Sahaya,
There are different types of places in the city and many more around Kolkata. You can search "weekend destinations near kolkata" on google. I found some websites listing 110 and even 165 destinations around Kolkata. Check these lists and make a plan before you visit the city, otherwise you will waste time deciding on places when your trip starts.

thanks!

If you are on Kolkata Sight Seeing Trip, I suggest you avail WB Tourism organized Conducted Trip Bus. It is a day long trip, which covers most of the tourist oriented places in and around Kolkata. The quality of the Bus is very good and the Guide accompanying the Bus speaks good English.

The next question comes what will you do for the remaining 3 days? By the way, where you will be staying in Kolkata? Wherever it is, take help from locals for hiring car (if you still feel it necessary). I say this because Car Hiring Agencies in Kolkata are mostly area specific and locals will know them, for sure. Running rate for smaller cars in our area is @ Rs. 80.00 per hour or @ Rs.8/- per KM, whichever is higher.

Seems you will have to do some homework as only can know how much you can do (and enjoy) in a day.
If you open up #2 there is a lot of info including addresses,Tel No. and more. With the help of a map can plan your day(s).Some places are within walking distance, also a nice way to see the city.
We enjoyed Kolkata very much

From St Paul's go to Victoria and then on to Indian Museum and finish it off at Park Street. These you can do in a single walk. From Park Street walk upto Shahid Minar and then get the Metro at Esplanade station to go to Shova Bazar
Before getting into the Metro ask someone to show you the Tipu Sultan mosque. It's near the northern entry gate to the Metro.
Take the Metro to Shovabazar and ask people to show you Jaipuria College. The Deb's house is just across the street. Come back to Jorasanko which is a couple of stations to the south. Marble Palace is walkable from there.
Take the Metro again to go to Rabindra Sarobar. Ask anyone to show you where the Lake is. The locals don't call it Rabindra Sarobar.
Keep a day for Belur math. You could do Botanical Garden and Alipore Zoo on the same day. Vidyasagar Setu will be on the way from the zoo to the Botanics.
Birla Temple is somewhat to the eastern part of Calcutta and you have to ask someone how to get there. If you told me where you were staying I would tell you how to go there.
Have fun.
You could perhaps enjoy the city more if you didn't have any agenda to see any of these.
