Kolkata to New Jalpaiguri -- does it go thru Bangladesh?

I'll be going to India with companions in mid-January. Not sure about where the line from Kolkata to NJP runs, and I wondered if it's the prominent line through western Bangladesh that I see in my Lonely Planet guide. If so, will we need transit visas for Bangladesh?

If not, then that makes things simpler. But my next question is: Is there a train to Kathmandu from NJP (or anywhere in West Bengal/Bihar)? How long is a bus ride from the Darjeeling area to Kathmandu?

No, you won't be going through Bangladesh, the train goes through West Bengal. The other question, I don't know. I believe there's an entry point into Nepal somewhere in that area, but I don't know any more about it, nor if that is the best route.

I am pretty sure both questions are covered in that LP you have.

There are No trains to Kathmandu from anywhere!

The only railway in Nepal is the one that runs from Jayanagar (India) to Janakpurdham in Nepal, this is narrow gauge line and only goes a few miles into Nepal. (Officially non-Indian's are not allowed to cross into Nepal here - There is no customs/imigration facilities)
