Hi All,

I have booked Mongpong during Bengali New Year weekend. This time my plan is to go with my car.

Now currently, I am very confused to choose the correct route. I have gone through several posts (specially in BCM Touring).

I have been to Berhampore through NH34 back in 2012 January. The road condition was OK (it is managable but not preferred).

I have been to Sabujban through NH2 still Darjeeling More (Panagarh) and then took the Siuri Road back in 2009 August. This road was also in OK state.

Now my question:
1. Can anyone suggest me the route I should take?
2. From NJP to Mongpong Google Map is of no help :-( and where from I can expect some guidance?

I desperately need to know the route from NJP to Mongpong as I will reach NJP in late afternoon and have to reach there by evening.
Regards,
Soumyajit Haldar

From NJP come to Siliguri first. From Siliguri, Mongpong is around 30 odd KMs. Take Sevok Road (NH-31) from Siliguri and drive through the Mahananda Wild Life Sanctuary to reach Sevok. At Sevok, suddenly the dense forest gives way to open view of River Teesta on your right. Then you have to ride uphill for a few kilometers and cross river Teesta at Bag pul (The Tiger Bridge or Coronation Bridge). After crossing the bridge, you have to drive down a few KMs to reach your destination. Mongpong would come on your right. I think there is a Sign Board showing the way to WBFDC Lodge. It is fairly easy, straight forward affair.

Thank you Asish-da.... This really helps a lot... one of my team member was being to Doors for multiple times. Therefore, he will understand this direction and can guide me to drive....

What about still Siliguri? I will for sure start from Kolkata by 5:00 AM (although, my actual start time will be 4:00 AM due to pick up plans). Therefore, should I take NH34 and go straight or should I take NH2 and then meet NH34 somewhere in the middle. I am personally thinking to take NH34 from the starting.

Please help and it will be really nice, if someone has recently visited the road and give some idea about the road condition.

No idea, really! Only once did I travel by road (Royal Cruiser Volvo Bus) and that was a night journey. No idea about the road route from Kolkata to Siliguri. But there are plenty of experienced car lovers in IM, and I'm sure would surely come to your aid.

Do you have any special reason for sticking to NH-34? Although I admit that it is the main arterial road from Calcutta to Silliguri, yet I personally feel that high traffic and pedestrian density in this route, along with frequent traffic held-ups make driving very annoying.

Will you please mention the nature of vehicle you will be driving? And do you intend to be the only driver in your car?

There are few reasons to choose this road:
1. I have been to Murshidabad through this road sometime before
2. Taking Durgapur Expressway is only for the reason of driving comfort for a hundred KM [there may be other reasons, your inputs will always be helpful]
3. I have to pick up one of the member from Airport who can not come earlier than 5:00 AM

My car is i10 :-))))) We are 5 huge foody big human beings with tons of luggage. Average wight for the group will something near to 75 kg. :-)))))))))))))

And last but not the least, I am the only driver and rest don't even know how to start the car.

Please please and please, boost me with some positive energy... I know practically, it is risky but driving is my passion and this is the starting of few of my dream drives.... And I have chosen Mongpong as not much of driving is there..... :-P

FYI: I have a complete rest day between by to and fro journey..... :-D

Actually I was going to suggest that you better take this route instead, completely avoiding NH-34. This is the route most of us (me and many of my driving enthusiast friends) usually take nowadays. Although the distance to Siliguri by this route (via Dumka and Bhagalpur) is definitely greater, it actually saves us our precious time, mainly due to very sparse traffic and much better road surfaces. You certainly could have enjoyed your drive!

But on the other hand I am now hesitant to suggest this route to you because after a place called Pattabari (shortly after Messanjore) till you reach Dumka town the road is not good, in the state of Jharkhand, for a stretch of about 16-18 KM. It should be very difficult for you to negotiate this very deep pothole infested stretch with a heavily loaded i-10 car. And again after Dumka and Hansdiha town (in Jharkhand-Bihar border) there are several diversions due to some road construction works going on, where you should almost surely scrap the bottom of your optimally loaded car. But only if you could reach the state of Bihar once, you would have surely thrilled and enjoyed your drive. IMHO the state of Bihar boasts of very good (please read excellent) roads, possibly even much better than the roads we normally see here in this state of West Bengal.

Rahul da is absolutely right and it is the perfect route which I can assure you the best while the NH34 would be the road to the hell even worst than it. The main interesting part of the said route is that it would be little more lengthy but it won't be a monotonous journey for getting different landscape during the journey. When I went to Gangtok in the year 2009 with my Hero Honda CBZ then I took the route of Kolkata - Bardhaman - Moregram - Farakka - English Bazar - Raiganj - Dalkhola - Siliguri - Gangtok but it is still a nightmare to me though the route is after Karandighi, Dalkhola and so on is superb.

Thank you Rahul and Prasanta for the input. I have also visited the link sometime ago for the route details. But, I thought of going against all the odds and take the NH-34 as the road still Berhampore (Murshidabad) is manageable. And also guessed the rest of the route will be of similar difficulties.

But your posts with the words like "hell" made me confused. Is the road has become more bad recently? In that case, I need to choose other routes. For me the other choices are:

NH2 (Durgapur expressway) still Darjeeling More (Panagarh) and then have to take the Siuri road (the right turn) - After that I don't know the road, it meets the NH34 route somewhere in the middle but I haven't checked thoroughly. Although, I have been to Sabujban through this road still Bolpore crossing and post Panagarh the road is bad enough but with very less traffic. Can you please suggest the rest of the route?

The other one is the one you have mentioned. This one I have to check as I enjoyed reading the travelogue more than extracting the valuable information, last time I read it. But again Rahul, you are suggesting not to follow this route for bad road condition.

What to do I don't know........................ :-))))))

The road you turn right from Panagarh leads you straight to Moregram, ending at NH-34. In case you wish to take that road, just remember that it is better to take NH-2A via Gushkara and Vedia (Bhedia), as already neen mentioned in the link by me. Not only the Bardhaman-Siuri route is in better condition, it is shorter too. It is because I think that the Panagarh-Illambazar section is not in very good shape either.

It is actually a much better route, solely because it is not at all crowded like NH-34 at all. I suggest that you take both the routes for once and you will feel the difference. I take it all the time with my Indigo (Petrol) car, being accompanied by my wife and daughter. But as you say that it is an i-10 with five grown adults and lots of luggage, I am getting confused.

I checked the mentioned and found the route is something like this:

Kolkata->Burdwan (NH2)->Panagarh->Towards Siuri->SH9->Dubrajpur->NH60->Siuri->Tilpara Barrage->4KM Road->Seorakuri(80KM from Panagarh & 56KM from Illumbazar)->Left Turn(2 entries a building in between)[9KM after Seorakuri More Bengal Jharkhand Border->Messanjore(30KM)->Pattabari T Junction(15KM)[Rampurha-Dumka Highway]->Left Turn->Dumka(15KM)[Road Condition is Bad]->Turn Left on Dumka Clock Tower->Hansdiha->Valjore->SH23->Banka Road->Bhagalpur(111KM from Dumka)->Right Turn just Before Railway Flyover[A half Mandir on left]->4 Way Junction(700Mts)->Left Turn(Just at Turn School at Right)->Under Rail Lines Road->Kacheri Chawk (Court)[1.8KM]->Right Turn->3.5KM->Left Side->Vikramasila Setu(3.5KM
Long)->Tulsipur(12KM)->NH31->Right Turn->Purnea(68KM)->Right Road NH31->Huge RoundAbout(10KM)->Right on 4 Lane->Dalkhola(35KM)->Siliguri

Everything is fine, except if I check Google Map, it is suggesting leave NH2 near Kulti just before Maithan and after Asansol.

Any idea on this?

It possibly shows the road via Chittaranjan and Jamtara. But when I made my search it showed the desired route.

I guess that you better use some other option in Google map. You better initially seek the direction from Kolkata to Siuri. Then continue to add destinations in your option and add Dumka, Bhagalpur, Purnea (if required), Dalkhola and Siliguri as destinations. Purnea town has got an excellent and well marked bypass.
But as a first timer in this route and with your choice of vehicle, I guess NH-34 will be more suitable for you, specially when it is being widened and now is repaired somewhat.

Hi,

Recently I drove upto Purnea via Bolpur, Siuri, Messanjore, Dumka and Bhagalpur. As already reported by Rahul, road in between Pattabari and Dumka is in terrible condition. But, work is going on there. Initial road surfacing work is completed for 3 to 4 km at Pattabari end. So, you can manage this stretch easily. After that, one need to be very cautious while negotiating the pot holes.
95% road condition is good to very good. Traffic is less. So, I will prefer this route over NH 34.
Cheers.....
