Kolkata - Murshidabad
Hi all
We are yet again of to India,on the 5th Nov till 30 Dec We are stsrting of from Kolkata to Visag thro Orissa to Kolkata. Travelling to Kolkata from Bhubaneswar by train on the 17th Dec.and arrive (hopefully) 13.00. We want to contiue on to Murshidabad by bus as the train leaves 18.00 arrives there 22.00 - a bit late for us and to long a day (not getting any younger). Is there a nice place some where half way that can get a bus, go around the next day and then move on to Murshidabad . We have to be back in Kolkata on the 24th as we fly to Mumbai for a few days and then home. Have tried the "Search" and did not find anything about bus times and tried "Googleing" but nothing. So would welcome any info about busses and if anybody wants to add a "Must see" would most welcome. Many Thanks Elinor & David |

Elinor & David,
Welcome to Kolkata. Bus service (both Govt. and private) is quite frequent between Kolkata and Murshidabad. So you can take morning bus to reach there. Esplanade is the bus stop in Kolkata where you’ll find your bus. And I don’t think a break in between would be recommended. Anyways may be Krishnanagar is the place where you can take a break. And “Must see” at Murshidabad or in Kolkata? - Somnath

Hi Elinor & David,
There is a sticky thread in Kolkata section where important places and phone numbers are given – that list may help you. Sorry, I do not have any firsthand info on Murshidabad (I had never been to Murshidabad). I am trying to collect info from others and sharing with you. 1. Private bus is better. Not sure about Volvo service for Murshidabad / Bahrampur. 2. Esplanade for Private bus also (near Govt. bus stop – you can ask anybody there). 3. 4 – 5 Hrs. (approx) from Esplanade. 4. Krishnanagar is not a tourist place but Mayapur (ISKON temple) is good place which is located near Krishnanagar. - Somnath |

Dear Elinor & David,
The best place to stay at Murshidabad is Manjusha Hotel, on the banks of the Ganga, near Hazarduari. Don't, i repeat, don't stay at any other hotel, you'll miss the charm. The best way to go there is taking the Bhagirathi Ex in the evening. There is an a/c coach there, it'll reach Murshidabad at around 10pm and if you tell the hotel guys in advance, they will make arrangement to receive there. The owner, Mr. Utpal Sarkar, is a lovely and very helpful person. Again while coming back to Cal, catch the morning express train that too has an a/c coach. The usp of the hotel is its proximity to the palace and the river and a beautiful garden just by the side of the river. Regarding places to see there, there is a 3-4 hour city trip that will show you all the places. Do remember to include Katra mosque there. And don't include Hazaribagh Palace in that tour - you can see it separately as it's so close to the hotel. And do opt for horse driven carriage - it's a good experience. There are two boat trips you should take - one downstream, will take you to the other side of the river for Khoshbagh, half-an-hour's ride. The other is perhaps an hour ride upstream to Rani Bhabani's temple. The river has a controlled current there, so no need to panic. Take the boat from the hotel itself. The boatman is a caring, young guy. You will find a couple of Jorge Reverter's photos in this forum, taken from this hotel, featuring the boatman also. If you require any further information, feel free to contact me (through PM also). Happy holidaying. |
