Facility in Darjeeling toy train?

Hello

Is there a food facility in toy train?

Can you let us know the facilities available if any.

Thanks
Praveen

Which toy train?

I am no train expert, but I think there are at least two that are given this name; the Blue Mountain (Nilgiris) Railway up to Ooty, and one in Darjeeling.

I've never been on either, but I've seen the Nilgiris train in the station, and it is pretty basic. It is only a five-hour trip. If I ever catch it I think I'll use the toilet before leaving!

...If that is the kind of facility you are thinking of?

There's also the Neral - Matheran train, I think that's called a toy train too.

I did this last December, wonderful journey, but like Nick said pretty basic. No food available on the train - you can't even pass between carriages and the conductor has to swing round the outside of the train!

Can't remember about toilets but I very much doubt it ...

There is one in Shimla too...

But OP has posted this in West Bengal Section, to it clearly shows that he means Darjeeling one.

Sorry Praveen.

The 5:30 Kalka Shimla train (sorry forgot its name) does stop at Barog and load up with food. I was in 1st Chair Class and there was no charge for the food. Not sure what people in the other classes got.

I didnt know everyone out is so smart..

I had actually put this in Westbengal, so implicit assumption was for the darjeeling toy train..

Any answers now to my initial question

I have an infant so was wondering as its quite a long journey of 7.5 hours with almost no stops (more than a minute).

Thanks
Praveen

You'd hope their site has something on it, but I find it crap to navigate, so I'll leave that up to you : http://www.dhr.in/

Try searching the web for +darjeeling +"toy train," of for "Darjeeling Himalayan Railway" as it's really called.

There appears to be some fan club here: http://www.dhrs.org/

Hello Praveen

There are no facilities on the train. It does stop long enough at some of the stations to get a snack or cup of tea from shops. The train track basically runs alongside the road all the way, criss-crossing it every few hundred yards. It even goes through the main street of villages. The train sounds its klaxon every time it crosses the road so it's not too peaceful. Takes pretty much all day to do the full trip from NJP to Darjeeling. You may prefer to go up by jeep and then get a steam hauled train from Ghoom to Darj. I would next time!

If you're going from Kolkata, don't rely on making the connection with the Darjeeling Express - the narrow gauge train doesn't wait, as we found out.

Incidentally, the trip up to Ooty on the Nilgiri mountain railway is a delight, going through forest and tea plantations. We had a great view of the wild elephants that stopped the train briefly!
