Early December weather in Darj??

I was not going to travel from NJP to Darj because some local Indian citizens here said Darj was quite cold.

However, after reading several threads on this West Bengal forum I am reconsidering. How cold is it in Darj in early December?? What is it like taking the diesel powered "toy train" then?

I have some thermals, down-filled vest, mitts, a touque, a hoodie, and a 3-season sleeping bag that I can bring. I have "frozen" in Australian winters but as a Canadian can get by temporarily with some degree of uncomfortableness when suitably "attired" - even if the housing is not particularly warm.

That said, I go to the NJP area around Dec 3rd and return to Calcutta about the 9th. What is Darjeeling like then? Any particularly warm(er) guest houses to stay in??

Darjeeling will be in the high single digits in December - not too cold should you wish to visit. While the train from NJP sounds alluring - you will do a lot better if you make it up to Kurseong via Jeep and then take the 9D train that originates from Kurseong to Darjeeling @ 3 PM.Just FYI - this train is still hauled by a steam engine. Darjeeling will be quite cold ,yes in single digits,however it depends if the days are sunnier it will be pleasant during the day ,but if gloomier then it will be little worse...so not to worry..with thermals it wont be a problem.
