Hi All,

I am planning to do a Dooars Trip this April ... we are two and we have only 4 days ... I am starting from Kolkata by Kanchan-kanya Express on 1st April and my return train is on 5th April afternoon (Kanchankanya again) ... I have my train reservation upto Hasimara .. however I can get down at stop according to tour plan ..

Based on the above can you please suggest any trip plan for me for the above days ?? I like to some Elephant and Jeep safaries

If I book a small non-ac car for the above days, how much it may cost ??

Also, I do not have any opportunity to make any hotel booking as it is a very quick decision ...I do not need luxury arrangements .. basic and clean facilities are enough ... can you please suggest with some numbers where can I satyduring this tor at diferent places ?? I like to feel the jungle atmosphere and it will be nice if I can stay amidst the nature and jungle

please help me as there is not much time remaining to start my trip ..

Given your schedule i see the following options:

Hansimara

Acco:

1>Hollong Tourist Lodge (availablity highly improbable)
2>Jaldapara Tourist Lodge (WB tourism)
3>Barodabri Malangi-Lodge; WBFDC (Nearest to Hansimara)
4>Private hotels in Hansimara/Madarihat.

Try to get reservation for evening jeep safari in Jaldapara and/or early next morning elephant ride from Hollong bunglow.

Paren (Between Jaldhaka and Bindu; Near New Mal Jn Station)

Acco: Only WBFDC resort

No safari/elephant ride here; but excellent ambience amidst forest and hills. Leave for Gorumara in moring in hired cab. Try afternoon visit to Chapramari. Sight seeing : Bindu.

Murti WBFDC lodge (Very near New Mal Jn)
Same as Paren but much nearer to Gorumara/Chapramari. Good ambience but I prefer Paren.

Lataguri:

Acco :
1> Lots of private resorts.
2> Kalipur Eco Village, Gorumara (Forest Dept)

Most of the Lataguri resorts are in the town. The Kalipur village resort can be booked from Lataguri forest counter. It is inside the forest (walking distance from Medhla watch tower by river Murti) and has a good elephant ride in the package (Rs 2100 1N/2D for two)

There are a lots of other options/side tours from these places. I have suggested what i felt best suits forest stay and safaring.

Both WBFDC and WB Tourism sites let u check availability. Tourism site has online booking facility.

dont worry even if you extend your ticket upto Alipurduar Jn., TTE will extend your ticket with the additional nominal charge. your trip can be like this:-

Day-1: Reach Alipurduar at 11.00 a.m, Forest Bunglow at Jainti can be booked from the BTR Field director office just behind SDO Office at Alipurduar. If you get the booking ,go straight to Jainti(many private lodges are also available). It is 40min drive from ALIPUR.

Day-2: Start from Jainti and go direct to Jaldapara( If you have booking at Hallong)but there is a high chance of getting the booking on thursday as on this day no outsiders can book except from Coochbehar DFO Ofc.Even if you dont have booking of hallong you can try this no.9832347503 of Ratan Barman, who is a guide of Jaldapara, he can manage room in very high time too. But if still you dont get booking you can try Madarihat Tourist Lodge of WBTDC. Get the morning Elephant Ride(1st lot) done. and start for Chapramari next morning.(no need to stay extra day here)

Day-3: Stay at the Chalsa inspection bunglow if you dont have booking at other places, it is situated amidst the middle of Gorumar-Chapramari-Jhalong-Bindu-Suntaleykhola-Samsing. This can be booked from Malbazar office of PWD, ph-03562255129, which have all the basic amenities at an amazingly low cost.. otherwise stay at any hotel at Lataguri or Malbazar Tourist Lodge by WBTDC.

Day-4 tour according your plan and take the evening kanchankanya at 6.30 p.m from Malbazar

a maruti 800 can charge around 700-800 per day with everything included, you can contact Raju of Malbazar at 9733123687 for car hiring, he is a nice little fellow, who saved us when we were stranded at an forest near Bindu while our car broke down.

enjoy your trip, my suggestion:- dont miss Jaldapara, Chapramari both.. because chances of seeing animals are high there..

You can get down but boarding in between is different ... the TTE is empowered to cancel and resell your ticket if you dont board within two station. For kanchan exp and Hansimara that should be Siliguri jn (better confirm). Also remember that halting time at Mal jn is very little and given the state of the station infrastructure, i would prefer boarding from Hansimara, especially if i had heavy luggage.

I suggest you start from Malbazar (get down at Mal Jn) on 2nd Apr, stay at Lataguri and do Chapramari and Gorumara that day.Reach the Lataguri forest post for reservation as early as possible bcoz there will be a likely rush and entries are limited.

3rd take the njp-alipur passenger from Malbazar to Madarihat. The train is a bit uncertain but the journey is very rewarding. You can always hire a cab alternatively. Book next morning elephant ride from Hollong (~ 6 kms from Madarihat station).Remember that Hollong lodge guests are given the first priority for the elephant ride and again the no of rides are limited.

4th moring, after Jaldapara elephant ride, leave for Jainti; again you may take the same passenger train from Madarihat to Rajabhatkhawa, and then take a tempo to Jainti. Jainti has limited private acco. Try and stay there instead of rbk if possible. There is an evening safari in Buxa frm Jainti.

5th come to Hansimara at leisure and take return train.

As u might have guessed by now im not much of a "cab tourist" but that is entirely a personal preference

Be prepared to shell out atleast a 1000/day for hired cabs. Remember that the time ur going will c a good rush of tourists and Gorumara to Jaldapara is a good distance (>100 kms).

I suggest you hire cabs in parts; one for the Gorumara leg of the trip, one for Jaldapara and the third for Jainti. Avail public conveyance for the rest. Jainti to Jaldapara is about 50 kms so u can also keep the cab u hired at Jaldapara.

Time will be precious factor for booking forest entries; so prioritize accordingly.

A few phone nos i have:
09734165196 (Netro of Madarihat; non ac omni)
09434808389 (partha of Lataguri; non ac omni)

Partha should be able to help you with avoiding the rush for Gorumara entry.

njoy ur trip!

Hi,

Just returned today by finishing my Dooars Trip .. Thanks a lot Dipnarayan and Miky for your valuable suggestions

I have taken a small car from Raju (suggested by Dipnarayan) for my whole trip ... and he gave me an excellent service for a very reasonable price ..

My Trip goes like this :

Day 1 : Get down at New Mal Junction, board the car and start for Lava via Gorubathan ... reached Lava ... have our lunch .. then visit Lava Monastry, Empty Reservoir and Lava Nature Interpretation Centre ... then start for Lolegaon ... reached Loleygaon in the late afternoon ... try WBFDC Forest Resort, but no room available ... stay at Yankee Hotel (the manager asked for Rs 1200 for the Hill-facing room, which we bargain down to Rs.500 ) ... then evening walk surrounding Lava .. the food in the hotel is very bad

Day 2 : Canopy Walk at the Heritage Forest of Lolegaon ... then start back to Lava ... the driver do not know the way to Rishyap ... as I have very little time in hand, decided to drive to Rishyap instead of Trecking ... but at a certain point, the road was so stony and stiff, the Alto cannot go more .. we started walking, but cannot able to reach Rishyap as being exhausted (not accustomed to so much walking ), came back half-way ... then drive back to Malbazar and start for our journey to Jaldakha WBFDC Forest Resort (this is the only place I manage to book in advance before the trip ) ... we drive through Chalsa, Chapramarimari forests ... the evening drive to Jaldakha Resort (Jhalong) was excellent and thrilling through the dense forests and hill ... but after reaching there, I was mesmerized ... thats a wonderful place in such a remote area .. the river Rongbu is flowing touching the bunglow ..there are only two rooms in this bunglow .. we and a other family .. a nice dining cum drawing place ..the care-taker arranged our evening tea and pakora just on the river-bank !! .. we have nice dinner and we sat for a long time (upto 12 of night) by the side of the river surrounded by forests .. an awesome experience ..

Day 3 : wake up early morning and walk through the shallow water and bolders of the river doing the photography for a long time ... then have our lunch (instead of breakfast !! and its very tasty) .. then start for Bindu ... visit Bindu and go further crossing the Bhutan border ... then go to Paren .. the Paren WBFDC resort is loacted in such a nice place and the way to this resort is also lovely ... then move to the Dalgaon View Point ... we walked a long distance in the midst of vast grassland and mild rain to reach the place ... a nice point see a vast landscape of the Dooars valley with the Rivers and also some part of Bhutan ... we then came back to Murti and tried to stay at WBFDC Murti Resort ... but no vacancy and the Manager's behaviour is also very bad .. I don't know why there is such a demand for staying in this resort !! anyway, we mane a nice room at the Tiyabon Resort .. it has small cottages just by the side of the forest ... in the evening we by chance come to see some Bengali Movie Stars who are also staying in this resort for shooting .. the food here is also very tasty

Day 4 : Our last day .. we wake up at 5 in the morning to go for the Jungle Safari .. as Gorumara is already full, we opt for Chapramari .. but the visit to the watch-tower is not at all worth... no glance of wiild animals after a long wait ! though we able to see the Chapramari Forest Bunglow from outside ... then we returned to our room ... get ready, have our breakfast and start for Dhupjora Elephant Camp to see the Tree-houses ... the tree-house name Teesta is very nice .. after that we drive back form Lataguri to Chalsa More and start for Samsing ... there is nothing to see in Samsing ... someone suggest to go a place name Shakamb form Samsing, but we have no time in our hand ... we drive to Suntalekhola ... there is a checkpost which does not allow you to enter with your vehicle further unless you have a booking at Suntalekhola Forest Bunglow (WBFDC) .. we walk down further but just as we reach a beautiful Hanging Bridge, a heavy rain started ... we took shelter in the small (and the only) tea and momo shop run by a very poor but nice local lady ... she gave us a nice cup of tea there .. we also found the Nature Resort of WBFDC at Suntalekhola just on the other side of the hanging bridge ... it is also wonderfully located .. its already 3:30 pm and we drive back to Malbazar to catch our train which is at 6:30 pm !! by chance, our driver gave some maoney to the gate-keeper and come upto the Hanging Bridge to take us back ... as we are driving back to station, just after crossing samsing , I found a stony and stiff way which leads to the Rocky Island ... and at that point we decide to go to visit the palce (alrady 4 pm) !!! by chnace, got a Geepsy which going upto there with some labours for construction .. we board on that for Rs.60 for two .. the drive was very slow and we reach theplace at 4:15 pm ... A Mesmerizing place !!! we took some quick photgrapphs and started running back .. I don't know how we walk up so fast through such stony and stiff road ... but we manage to reach our car at 4:50 pm .. again drive start ... on the way back, just after crossing Samsing, we visit a nice sunset from a very picturesque spot called Laligula Picnic Spot ... its 5:10 pm already .. then drive and drive ... reach New Mal Junction at 6:20 pm just 15 minutes in hand !! catch the train in time and reach home today morning !!

And thats the end of our expeditions !!

And at that point we decide to go to visit the palce (alrady 4 pm) !!! By chnace, got a geepsy which going upto there with some labours for construction .. We board on that for rs.60 for two .. it was a hectic but an excellent trip. Only thing you have missed rishyap.

Hello Dip!

An off topic question:

Years back when I first visited Mal, Lataguri etc., one of my friends recommended a Driver, whose name was incidentally Raju and he was based at Malbazar. His full name was Raju Lepcha and he is originally from Alipurduar area. He was turned out to be very good, caring and very knowledgeable. I wanted to refer him to my various contacts who are visiting Dooars. But unfortunately I lost his contact number and could not get hold of him thereafter. Can you please tell me whether your fellow is the same Raju or he is a different person? Thanks.

Friends, I have earlier posted that "I wish to visit Jayanti during late October'2012 with my three member family and family friend consisting 3 members. Now can you suggest how many days would be sufficient to stay at Jayanti to see in and around that place. And what will be the approx car hire charges from Jayanti to Jhalong." Now one of our indiamike friend "Sumanta" inform me "For Jayanti 3 days is enough for leisure and sight scene. But, for your information in October all forest will be remains close. You won't able to have any jungle safari." Now can anyone kindly specify the actual date or period for the forests usually remains closed, so that I can reschedule my program accordingly. Further, if possible inform about the approx car hire charges from Jayanti to Jhalong.
