| On 26.09.2009,I with my wife and daughter reached New Jalpaiguri station at 10-30 a.m. by train from Sealdah (Kolkata). I took one Maruti Van and started for Lava. The rate was fixed after few bargaining at Rs. 1500 only. The route preferred by me was via Sevok bridge-Odlabari-Damdim-Gorubathan-Paparkheti. This route is a little offbeat. The beauty of the route was excellent. We took our launch at Odlabari at a dhaba. On the way, we stopped various times for taking snaps. We reached Lava at 3-00 p.m. We had booking at a beautiful cottage, Gorkha-4 owned by W.B.Forest Development Corporation. This is the best place of staying. The location of the cottage is very good. The Khanchendzunga peak was visible in front of us. Next day, we started for Loleygaon. It took 1 hour 30 minutes from Lava. We stayed in the forest cottage namely Hornbill-3. In the night, the view of distant Kalimpong town was awesome. The taxi fare was Rs. 600. It should be noted that after getting at Lava or Loleygaon, you should contact with the local Car Syndicate for advance booking for car for the return journey. It is difficult to get a car without booking at Car Syndicate. But, the men at the Syndicate never maintain the time for sending car. The cottages at Lava and Loleygaon are clean and comfortable for staying. In bathroom, you can use the geyser. The Nepali men working in the Forest Devp. Corporation are obedient and dutyful. We went Rishop from Loleygaon by a maruti Van at Rs. 1200. We booked Hotel Sonar Bangla online through IRCTC. The location of the Hotel is very good, but the service and food are worst. We reached at 12-30 noon, but got our launch at 3-00 p.m. after much shouting !! There was only rice and omlete !! In night, we can not eat the horrible rotis. However, the site was excellent ! The panoramic view of Rishop is wonderful. We found the Khanchendzunga peak from our windows. It was magnificent ! Rishop is a must for those who love hills. Please take note, these three places are small villages on the hills renowned for their scenic beauty, where shopping/marketing etc. should be kept aside. In Lava, you may get few shops. From Rishop, we started for Aritar-Zuluk-Thambi-Kupup in Sikkim. We returned back from Sikkim via Kalimpong. The circle had been completed. That is another story. |

| Rikisum_a new offbeat destination Rikisum, located on the Pedong-Lava Road, is a quaint little settlement atop a hill. It offers a magnificent view of the mountain ranges of the Kanchenjunga and is often considered the best viewpoint of the Kalimpong sub-division for viewing the hills of Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Gangtok and Pedong towns. One can easily go there via Kalimponng from NJP or from lava. Thanks........

1. Could anyone have any idea about the rental charge of car from Bagdora airport to Lava? 2. Planning to stay at WBFDC cottage in Lava...Is there any time boundings to check in at the WBFDC cottages (like 4 p.m...otherwise the reservation will be cancelled)?...coz flight is scheduled to land on bagdogra at 1:20 p.m... So???... 3. WBFDC@Lava Lepcha 1 and 2 is booked...so...which one would be the better alternative -- Dupka 2/3/4 or Gorkha 3/4? 4. What about Hill Myna 1/2/3?...Log Cabin: Not interested for its location. 5. Is it safe if I directly book hotel at Rishap from Kolkata through account payment as the account number provided by the hotel owner or book through an agent? Last but not least... ======================= 6. BarBQ at WBFDC@Lava & NVR@Rishap.....Do they have any arrangements for this? Thanks in advance, Arnab | |

| HI Arnab, Welcome to Indiamike. #1. Rs. 1800-2000/- #2. NO such time bound..but please call them after reaching Bagdogra about the approximate arrival time. #3,4. Dukpa 4 is in best position amongst the available cottages you mentioned(however it has only an ordinary bulb to glow at night like other Dukpas, whereas others have flouroscent lamps)So,if you want a little more comfortable stay you can go with Gorkhas Gorkha 3 just beside canteen Gorkha 4 behind the canteen at a distance), If you are to book a single room..what I prefer is to go for Dukpa 4 straight away. #5 I don't know about which hotel you are talking? If it is by CBS it is safe. #6 Sorry Thanks.. |

| Oh Dear..by mentioning Room, I wanted to mean just the place for accommodation..They all are definitely single cottages..including Dukpa 4. You are right to book that one as it is an ideal cottage for honeymooners.I have uploaded a photo of it..the Green Cottage at the rear is Dukpa 4. ![]() You can also find it here at the left..http://www.indiamike.com/photopost/s...0/ppuser/51529 ![]() and the view from WBFDC (our cottage was Dukpa 1, the best I think) http://www.indiamike.com/photopost/s...4/ppuser/51529 ...Thanks ![]() |

| I am too confused with your itinerary. Doing that with your 11 month old child? , in this winter? I do not suggest such a hectic one. I don't know, but you two might have that strength to enjoy such a busy schedule..but with your little baby? Atleast I would not have gone for that.. ![]() |

| Feb 1st week 2010 - Lava, Lolegaon Hi guys, We are planning a honeymoon trip to Lava, Lolegaun in the first week of Feb, 2010. I have gone through most of the posts above and would request your views on the following points 1. Being photography freaks and nature lovers, what is the best car route from Bagdogra to Lava. 2. Apart from Dukpa-1 and Lepcha-1, which are the best cottages in Lava where we could stay and get a good view of the hills and kanchenjunga in particular. 3. Since I am in Bangalore, how do I manage the cottage booking? Do we need to send documents/money etc to the branch office in Kolkata? How does it make a difference if I get the booking done by an agent or through WBFDC directly? Does the agent charge more? If yes, how much? 4. Being nature lovers, photography freaks and looking to spend a lazy vacation, do you think Lava, Lolegaun is enough for a 4 day stay? Please do let me know. Regards, Anu |

| Hi Anu: Taking a stab on answering your questions, 1. Take the route through Gorubathan if you prefer the silent, quaint route. However, if you prefer travelling alongside the Teesta river (with some vehicular congestion), go via Kalimpong. By default, the cabs from NJP/siliguri take the Gorubathan route, unless you specify explicitly. 2. Honestly speaking, viewing the mountains specially Kanchenjunga is limited from Lava (from Lepcha 1 or 2, you will not probably be able to see).Atleast the dupkas will provide you with something better. If you really want a better view of kanchenjunga, plan to visit Rishap. 3. If you have relatives/acquaintances in Calcutta, request them to book for you. You can also try contact the WBFDC reps through their website (believe me, they do respond/call back, I raised a complaint and they actually called me back to enquire about the details). Never gone through an agent, so dont know the difference, but yes, they will definitely charge a premium. 4. 4 days is more than enough for Lava + Lolegaon. (in fact 3 days is sufficient, 2 days at Lolegaon + 1 day at Lava - with the additional 1 day, you can either choose to stay at Lava or maybe make a quick trip to Rishap) |
