Destination Lava-Lollegaon-Rishap

Hi everybody,

Unveiling one picturesque hill station of West Bengal…!
It’s smaller, cheaper, more serene than the conventional destination Darjeeling.

I am talking about Lava-Lollegaon-Rishap in the kalimpong hills of West Bengal.

With monastery, sunrise point, falls, flowers and of course great view of Himalaya with the queen Kanchenjunga it is a spot worth visit for 4-5days.

From Lava, one can trek to Rishap, a hamlet atop with a spectacular view of Sikkim Himalaya. Spend one leisurely day there after trekking 4km and then comeback after overnight stay.

there are two more sights neer lava... Chhangey falls and Tiffindara top view point. Both require 1-2 km of mild trekking.

Attached some photographs taken by me for a glimpse.

Hi Babu,
Disappointed with the ministry of tourism in West Bengal? Good effort from ‘privet’ sector . Just joking.

But friends this a great place indeed, there is NO DOUBT.

I want to be convinced

Ok babu and somnath, if I go to Sikkim and to Darjeeling, including perhaps the Singalilla trek, what will the Lava-Lollegaon-Rishap area add to my trip? From your description it sounds like a lovely, gentle place, something I won't find in Darjeeling, Pelling, Yuksom, Gangtok.

I have so far only done 'hill stations' in the south, loved Munnar (the plantations and the people), did not like Ooty (dirty, unfriendly), and found Kodaikanal pretty but a little too...normal. I'll be getting lots of views of Queen K, hopefully, from Darjeeling, Pelling, and Sandakphu.

I don't know yet what I want to do in Sikkim if I don't trek there and do instead the trek west of Darjeeling. If I don't have the time, should I cut short my stay in Sikkim and do the Kalimkpong area instead?

I have been to MUNNAR, Not to OOTY. munnar is beautiful but that is not on HIMALAYAS. it makes a big difference. february will be cold in WB-sikkim hills.

If you are in the area, try a night out at Pedong. There is a hill top known as Tinchuley (Well there are many thinchuleys around here, so dont get confused). From This hilltop you can get a 360 degree panoramic view of surrounding mountains and the plains. Sikkim, Bhutan Hills, Kunchenjunga, the Dooars, the Darjeeling hills, the Chinese Tibet, Jelepla even down under you can see Tista. An amazing place. Its forest land, so you need to camp there for overnight stay.

For Aritra

Hi Aritea,

4 nights r not sufficient for this tour. Anyway u can make your schedule like this:
27.12—take bus for kalimpang from NJp. From kalimpang take a cab for lava. Try to
Stay at cottage of west Bengal forest dev corp.It is fantastic sply Lepcha cottage.
28.12¬---stay Lava.
29.12---Rishap. You can go there by trekking, it is just 4 km from Lava. You can get
Porter for carrying your luggage. Before going Rishap get the information about
The bus to Lolagaon, because u have to comeback at Lava for Lolegaon.
30.12--- Lolegaon.Again try to stay at WBFDC rest house.U can get the spectacular view
of Kanchanjangha from here. Try to reach as early as possible cause u’ll get
Very little time for Lolagaon.
31.12--- start for Siliguri through garubathan. The road is fantastic.

On late December temperature will be around 2-3 degrees. At Rishap u can get snowfall
Also,so take care of your winter garments.

You can do the tour in reverse way also.

Lava

LAVA itself is under the area of Naora valley N park. The treking rout from Lava to Rishap is through NVNP.It is just one hour treking. At Lava there is a Monastery, you can go by walk also.(if you like?)At Lolegaoun you can enjoy a canopy walk.
There is a view point of Sunrise.Actually these area are only
for enjoying the nature, cloud & Kanchanjangha.
Have a nice journey.

Update on Neora Valley

The valley below the Neora Valley National Park is being developed for tourists.

The path to Chhagey Falls will be paved and have handrails.
Near the top of the path to the falls there will be a manmade "lake" and apparently people can go boating on it.
The valley is supposed to get electricity in the next few months and the road all the way to the bottom will be paved, but the date is not known.
