Darjeeling toy train
Hi,
Can anyone tell me if the toy train is still running from NJP to Darjeeling? I've been looking on the internet but seem to get alot of conflicting ideas! Thanks! |

Now that it's classed as a World Heritage as far as I know it's running. But from this stage, it uses a New diesel engine whilest still retainig the old boogies. If you are planning on a trip on the Toy Train I suggest you wait till you get upto Darj. and take the daily trip from there to Kurseong, thats when they actually use the 150 year old engine. And this is the most scenic part of the journey. Don't waste time on the trip up from NJP.
Good Travels

There is some political problems going on in the Darjeeling Hills for the last few weeks. Do keep a watch about the strikes in the hills.
From NJP/Siliguri, train No. 1D is hauled by a diesel engine. You can take the Kurseong passenger from Darjeeling as well as the Joy ride, which is for tourists - First Class compartments, the train starts from Darjeeling, stops at Batasia loop, comes to Ghoom (the highest station in this railway and now probably is the third highest railway station in the world) , and then comes back again to Darjeeling. Round trip fare is around Rs. 250. It is hauled by the century old steam engine. see this picture of the Joy Ride train standing at Batasia Loop and tourist coming out and enjoying the gardens. : http://www.indiamike.com/photopost/s...8/ppuser/15496

As per my experience with the Darjeeling "Toy Train" (travelled between Darjeeling and Siliguri in Aug 2007), the entire ride is superb - full of natural beauty & landscapes. There's one hitch although - and thats FOOD. There's almost no major stops after Ghoom n Kurseong, there are almost no major stations which offer u quality food stuff. And the on-board meal service is pathetic (they basically get the food from a small station called Tindharia - and the food is much below standards)!
So my advice will always be that do avail of the Toy Train service - its a marvellous ride - but make sure u've packed enough food stuff for the entire journey (total journey time from Darjeeling to Siliguri Jn is around 7 hours). |
