ho sarah and deerfiej
in case our leader Subash Gishing resigns quitely then there will be no tension however if he plays smart then there might be an agitation....so just keep reading the news you'll find out after 11 th will keep updating about the issue...today offices were opened after so many days...lets hope for the better that the situation will be under control without blood shed,i really hope so as i remember the days back in 1980's ...it was terrible...

Trip Report from Darjeeling on 7th March 2008

I think it is wise to read carefully the news before deciding. Things are hanging in the balance right now.

We arrived yesterday (6th March) from Bagdogra and had an hour's wait in Kurseong at a Mourcha blockade.

Next Monday (the 10th) is the day when Mr. S. Ghising will either resign or else things will get more complicated.

We are planning on going to Darjeeling iom March 27 to April 1. I find it hard to find updates on the political situation /strikes. Does anyone of you know whether planning a vacation there at the end of this month is feasible?

All is quiet now, the agitations gone. Just came from Kalimpong 19th/03 and no problems, so just go ahead with your plans.

The only unrest now is among the Tibetans who are marching against the Chinese in Tibet, but they are peaceful protesters and dont disrupt anything.

what about now?

i just booked a roundtrip ticket to bagdogra for april 18 - 27

and THEN looked up for current info on darjeeling and found out about the tensions...
argh!

so can anyone comment on if there are current problems that are actually affecting tourism?
i see that something is going on there, but i wonder if it should discourage my trip because i've been going to nepal for several years despite their tensions and it has been fine.

so please, anyone who has been to darjeeling in the last few weeks, please share your thoughts/advice.

thanks!

I was there about a week ago now, and it was absolutely fine. There was a peaceful demonstration through the town culminating in a gathering in Chowrasta, re: the bid to separate from West Bengal. But it was just that. Peacful and good humoured.

India changes from minute to minute so its not worth worrying about. Besides the graciousness to forens is astounding. I wandered into one demonstration and was invited to join them, inquilab zindabad!!

Hi Nitesh,
Welcome to IndiaMike.
This is very difficult to anticipate the situation of May. And some local members (from Darjeeling and around) could provide more specific info on current situation. Anyways, my personal opinion the condition of Darjeeling has improved and reservation can be done. But need to have a close look on latest development before starting.

- Cheers.

Road block / strike / agitation is very common in Darjeeling now. One of my friends is just back from the area (actually Sikkim but Melli to Shiliguri was not at all comfortable). Time to think about the visit once again.
Please let us know about your decision. And any local / related member?

I have decided that I will go ahead and enjoy my vacation in Kurseong and Darjeeling. Could someone give me the working phone numbers of Darjeeling Tourist Lodge. I tried some numbers on internet. But it's saying 'not a valid number'.... Also please do tell me a reasonable hotel in Kurseong... Strikes will not matter to me unless there is violence or something.. So I am positive..

Please reply with a working tel number of Darjeeling Tourist Lodge (or similar hotels with good views) if you have..

I will start my trip on 9th from kolkata.. So say all the best to me..
