Darjeeling area Tea gardens

Hi! I hope to find a tea garden named Sumripani, near Dooteria, near Ghoom. It's a personal connection (my father worked there 60 years ago). Does anyone know anything about it, eg more exactly where it is, how to get there, if I could visit? It would be great to find any more info about it.

Arya, Chongtong, Dooteriah, Kalej valley, Lingia, Marybong, Mim, Orange valley, Pussimbong, Risheehat, Rungmook Cedars, Tumsong

I think sumripani probably is part of a larger tea estate may be i dont know I can ask around

Cheers

Samripani is a tea estate in Darjeeling district falling under block - Sukhiapokhari. As far as I know it falls somewhere on Gangtok-Darjeeling road, near a place called Jore Bungalow.
May be we need help from a local resident there.

Sukhiapokhri is on Darjeeling-Mirik road. There is bus and shared jeep service from Darjeeling, fare-Rs. 25. Jore Bungalow is just after Ghoom.....and the road to Sukhiapokhri takes a right turn from Ghoom as it leaves the Hill Cart Road. This is what I know but do not know anything about the Tea Estates.

However, will be grateful to know if any high-altitude Tea Estate provides lodging facilities (eco-tourism)...I would be happy to go there.............

Yes one can stay in this bungalow. This bungalow is situated just below the estate. Our travel agent had booked it. Hardly any traveler stays there I think. At the processing plant the management takes pleasure in showing you the whole process of tea making. You can talk to them about the bungalow.

Tea Gardens in the darjeeling area

Hi all! Wonderful replies to my query!

Looking at my father's letters, he was working at a tea plantation in Dooteriah in 1946/1947. It seems then they also had an outpost in sumripani. He describes the trip there from the main one in Dooteriah as a down trip, fall of 400 meters, across a river and then up again 400 meters to a spur, where Sumripani was situated - a bit of an outpost of the company. In those days it seems they all belonged to the same company - but this was at the tail end of British rule, so obviously there are likely to have been many changes. Still, all you have told me certainly makes me hopeful I can find it! Great! I am really pleased!

If "Dooteriah" is Dhotre, then you can get there on the Darjeeling-Rimbik bus.

If you hire a car, and Coming from Siliguri to Darjeeling, leave the Hill Cart Road at Ghoom, take the left turn into Darjeeling-Mirik road, proceed to Sukhiapokhri, take right to Maneybhanjan, and after some ups and down, you come to Dhotre. Dhotre offers a beautiful panorama of the Kanchanjunga range and Tonglu trekkers hut is just 5 km of walking from there. If Dhotre is the place, then I would love to visit that tea garden.

Hi again!

It is possible, isn't it that Dooteriah could be Dhotre. I must go back to study the letters better. Thanks in that case for the directions! the only thing is if you look up 'dooteriah' on the net there are results relating to tea, but no directions other than being near Ghoom, so I am continuing to hunt.
