Thanks - that website helped a lot. FWIW, they only accept cash payments on the spot, so if you are not local the only way to book seems to be by going through a travel agent and sending them money via DD/wire transfer (and of course they charge a service charge of 10%). I used Nature Beyond Travels.

Anyway, I'm all booked - now lets just hope that the weather cooperates

Ray is right. Rishop will be the most beautiful of the lot (others). You can go by booking a car from Kalimpong.

Otherwise, both are crowded and congested. You have to move a few steps out and around the town and can still find its old charm. Scenery along the roads like Darjeeling - Mirik and Darjeeling - Teesta Bazar are breathtaking. This is the seventh or eigth time I am visiting Darjeeling in June with my family and we talk about coming back every year.

Actually, some snow points (seasonwise) like Nathu La and Tsongmo, as well as North SIkkim is better accesible from Gangtok which makes it more attractive to tourists, not the town itself.

We all have our favourites then! I love Sikkim so I guess Gangtok would get my vote if I had to choose between them, but there is so much more than Darj and Gangtok to choose from, as many folks say.

I was in Mirik recently and have posted some photos on my blog - let me know if you want the link.

I have stayed in the Bellevue (new) and it really wasn't anything special. when I was there in April we stayed in a lovely place just of Chowrasta - full of character and very reasonably priced. The name escapes me just now but if you want it then I can search the grey cells - it is there somewhere.

Sharadm,
How was your trip? Did you stay at the Himalayan Hotel in Kalimpong? How was it?

better yes, more charming, no. Gangtok is more organized, Darjeling has more character.

to my mind a visit to both places are worthwhile and fullfilling, but for different reasons.

Loved Darjiling. Liked Gangtok.

I found it much easier to find decent accomodation and food in D., but I give the Gangtok Do-Drul chorten and gompa almost as many points as Darjiling's Tibetan refugee centre and Zoo and toy train and...

Summarizing, I suppose I could use another week (had two) in Darjiling and add three-four Gangtok days to the week I've had so far.
