cruise plans in kolkata
friends,
I have a guest coming in from outside town and I want to take him on a day cruise on the Hoogly. It will not be an overnight trip and I do not intend to go to Sundarban. I am more interested in giving the person just a cruising experience and also want him to see how the city and the suburbs looks from the river. So can anyone inform me whether there is any such cruise on a steamer/launch? thanks for all your help. |

You can go from Dakshineshwar to Belur around sunset time.
A 30 minutes ride it crosses the Howrah Bridge and gives a great view. |

Ah right , there are quite a few options in Bandel/Naihati.
I haven't taken any ride here apart from just crossing the river. I took nice rides from a place called Ramnagar Ghat(Plassey) to Katwa/Nabadwip a full two hours ride several years back. These places are a few hundred kilometres upstream. It wasn't very pleasant though as the boats were overcrowded and the smell of diesel was awful. |

just from what i've heard
It seems there is a union or organization of ferry/boat/launch owners. They can put you onto some owners who hire out these launches for private hire such as the Sundarban trip (i know you don't want that but these are the people who hire out for any trip anyway).
I understand that they are located on any one of the three jetties on Strand road from Babughat onwards towards the Howrah Bridge. Sorry I can't help further. Some more experienced IMers may be able to help, but otherwise ask at the ticket counter at Babughat for a start. |

You might find this site useful:
http://www.vivada.com/ I don't have any experience of them, it's just that remember finding the site before I visited Kolkata last year. |
