Christmas in Kolkata.....!
My partner and I are refugees from the concrete and garbage hell, that is now Goa.I first visited the city in 1990 and the last time was 3 years ago and i have never lost interest in Kiplings " City of infernal Night." He was born in Mumbai so he biased.Planning on staying in West Bengal for at least 2 weeks before we head up the Grand Trunk to Varanasi and Delhi and on to Mumbai. What i need is some current advise on hotels in Kolkata. Centrally located if possible.Fairly cheep or middle priced, but clean and hassle free. Does anybody know what the situation is like in Ghawati at the moment ? Every time i have planned to travel up there from Kolkata, some b***ard sets off a bomb and i miss the chance to see The Bramahputra. Would appreciate some info please. Thanx.

Guwahati - hmmm, well, ehmm.. - not as grim as Kashmir, you can definitely take a chance. But don't plan on staying there for long, and avoid markets. I've never heard that any hotel has been bombed there.
Kolkata hotel - foreign tourists generally stay in the Sudder street area. Leyton hotel (can't remember the spelling) is little bit more pricey, but some members here prefer it. Searching in the Kolkata forum will help you a lot. And, by the way, a very warm and hearty welcome to Kolkata. Got it : it's Lytton hotel. Last edited by mousourik : Sep 8th, 2009 at 11:37. |

Thanks for the advise mate.I know all about Sudder street and its illegal activities. The smoking substances dont bother me that much as the loud mouthed Bangladeshi ladies of the night shouting at you as you leave the Cafes for custom !I know about the Lytton Hotel and its OK. Years ago i used to stay regularly on Sudder Street, but the Little Sisters of the Poor disciples, mostly from the USA put me off.Bit to much sanctimonious for my English up bringing and i am not too sure about Mother Theresa's saintly attributes either.....But Kolkata is something special in my heart. Its a complete melting pot like London. Thanks for the advise.
