Bongaon

Am wondering if anyone's been to this small city on the border of Bangladesh and if so, whether any lodging available in the town? Checked online and was unable to find out much...there are hospitals, restaurants and schools listed, but no signs of loding anywhere. Thanks very much in advance!

Just wondering why you want to go there? Its a small, crowded town. You will definitely find some small lodgings there but nothing fancy. If you want to experience how crowded a local train can be, board the train going to Bongaon from Sealdah in the evening.

I appreciate your response. A good friend of mine's hometown is Bongaon; he wants to show me it to give me a glimpse of Bengali rural life. As an American I think it could be quite interesting.

What no Oberloi?? No I didn't expect lodging to be anything too opulent - wasn't even sure there was any! Yes I have heard that the train-line gets extremely crowded; I suppose it's people commuting to and from Kolkata for work? Two hours each way is pretty tough though....Anything else you can think of sharing? Thanks again!

Not quite sure about it! How much of rural Bengal is left is doubtful. But if your friend lives some distance away from the station, then you can get some feel of it.

Frankly, I am also not sure But, it being a border town and people travel to and from Bangladesh, there definitely will be some hotels. But I guarantee that no American has ever stayed there. Be ready for some photo sessions with the owner and the photos will most probably find a place in the hotel reception

You can check out Taki, a nice place on the banks of the river Ichamoti. The other side of the river is Bangladesh and you find some decent accommodation here. You can find Taki in this map.

There ARE hotels available at Bongaon, although I'm unable to name any.

There is one deer park nearby - at Parmadan.

Thanks people on your suggestions about hotels, and to kausiks on your idea of visiting Taki. One question I had for you concerns your inference on about rural West Bengal...how is it disappearing...Do you mean due to the state becoming too crowded?

I dont know about the time table, but for a rough idea -

there a sealdah bongaon train(called bongaon local)once every 30-45 mins during morning and evening rush hours.

For the rest of the day they usually ply at intervals of 1 hr to 1.5 hrs.

toanup, if you specify the time, then a brief schedule can be given. but keep it in mind - it's awfully crowded.

bongaigaon and new bongaigaon has nothingto do with bongaon . Different states I think.

One advise - Please donot "google and serve" info where you donot have practical experience.

Thoughtcrimes, West Bengal is all about villages and rural areas only. Only Kolkata City is metropolitan but outside Kolkata you will only see green farmlands only. Since West Bengal is one of the Hot and Humid state in India you will see Green everywhere outside the city. I suggest you to tell your friend to take you on a round route while returning from Bongaon to Sealdah. take the route of Bongaon-Chakdah on Bus and Then Chakdah- Sealdah on train. It will cost you 2 hours more but will give you a good sight of rural areas on that National Highway no 35. My ancestral village is also the same route near a place called Mede.
