Bankura/Bishnupur

I want to make a small trip to Bankura, Bishnupur, Mukutmanipur, etc. Can anybody tell me whether I can travel to Bankura by car? If somebody has actually travelled can help me out about the route to be taken and the road condition.

Another road through Hugli district

There's another road from Kolkata through Tarakeswar-Arambag-Kotulpur-Bishnupur-Bankura. Try this clickable roadmap and it'll be more clear.

http://www.mapsofindia.com/maps/west...ngal-roads.htm

The good point about this raod is, it first goes to Bishnupur, then Bankura. Then you can go to Mukutmanipur which is 56 km from Bankura. The road is not great but the surroundings are beautiful.

However, if you come from Durgapur, it'll be too much "Gol-Gol Ghoomna"

Now the bad news, this road goes through Singur-Tarakeshwar area

You can bypass that area by going directly to Arambag, however, I'm not much familiar with that.

That is a nice info. I know the route via Durgapur Expressway (which is just fantastic to drive) but as you have said via the Singur-Tarakeswar-Arambagh route, I am unable to make out how the road condition is, though that is the shortest route to take. I also found that one can also go via Kharagpur via NH-6, but that again will be a very long route to avail.

According to LP, Bishnupur Tourist Lodge (252013) is a Rs 20 ricksha ride from station -- and that's the only hotel listed.

If you know IndiaGuide, he may know of some other accommodation there.

They tried with Tourist Lodge without luck. Later I got a number of another hotel viz., Hotel Monalisa # 252894, and got the rooms. Thanks for your reply. Do you have any idea about that hotel?

Sorry, ji, I've never been to Bishnupur, and Monalisa isn't in the old Lonely Planet I have here. I hope your friends will write a trip report and tell us about the hotel when they have finished their visit!

Monalisa Hotel and Monalisa Lodge both are there – good one but Hotel Laxmi Park: (03244) 256353 / 256376 / 256377 is something I can recommend. Geetanjali is another Hotel. Udayan is also a good option.
BTW, just today I am back from Bishnupur, well. I didn’t get any room in any hotel at Bishnupur because Bishnupur Mela is inaugurated. Finally managed a room on rent for one night.

I went by car. The shortest route : take Belgharia Expressway > Dankuni toll plaza > Tarkesware > Arambag > Bishnupur.

Toll plaza to Tarakesware – this area is will take a lot of time due to bad condition of road. But rest of the journey was good. Bali Bridge to Bishnupur is 222 KM.

- Merry Christmas

Thanks Somnath for your information. Will take your suggestion when we go to Bishnupur. The railway station master of Bishnupur has helped me a lot on getting the said hotel for my friends. If you require will help you out getting rooms at Bishnupur in future. He is really a helpful person. How was your trip. Merry Christamas to you and advance happy new year 2008.

Thank you once again.

I would like to add few comments on what Somnath had said. Today only I returned from Bishnupur by car. The best private hotel (locationwise and otherwise) i found is Hotel Heritage & Udayan Lodge. Both of them have decent rooms with car parking facility at reasonable rates and are beside the Govt Tourist Lodge.

Though I stayed at Hotel Laxmi Park and the hotel has just launched its service (Oct 2007), the service was horrible. I was denied breakfast in room and only tea was served and they asked me to have breakfast at their restaurant. To my dismay when after breakfast I asked for another cup of tea, they again denied saying that tea is only served in rooms!!! This is just ridiculous. There is nothing so called room service though they charge 5% towards service charge. But they have very clean & well decorated rooms.

The shortest route is Bally Bridge > Dankuni (Delhi Rd Durgapur Expressway crossing take a left turn) This is much before the toll plaza > Masat > Chanpadanga > Arambag > Bishnupur

By taking this route you can bypass Tarekswar, the toll of Rs 35 and save 10 km.

The distance from Salt Lake to Bishnupur is 142 km via Shyambazar (I went on Holi so didnt take the Belghoria Expressway). Somnath, in no way it can be 222 !!!

Hmmmm…..
Thanks for the firsthand info. As I said, I didn’t get any chance to avail room service but the cleanliness of the Hotel Laxmi Park was really noticeable.
And you are right about the KM. There are so many answers in the web. So I just calculated the meter of our car. May be, the local trips or something came in the picture.
Thanks for sharing the information. Hey any photographs – plz?
