Wonderful Volunteer Experience
Hi guys, if you are looking for a great volunteer experience let me quickly tell you about Lok Biradari Prakalp.
In 1973 an MD, Prakesh Amte, walked into the jungle and opened up a medical facility in a hut for the local tribal people - the Madia Gond. Today it has grown to include a rudimentary hospital, school, and an animal orphanage - all for the tribals. I spent about 2 months there volunteering and had a wonderful time. I worked in the hospital and saw some amazing things. Tribals would walk for days out of the jungle for bear bites and other illnesses. The Amte's are wonderful people, very laid-back and made me and my fiance feel right at home. At lunch we would play with Bubli, the baby langur, or just tour around the facility looking at the friendly faces. We couldn't have asked for a better volunteer experience. Anyway, they only get partial funding from the government. Not nearly enough as they need medications, food for the animals, and pay for the teaching staff, food for the children etc... So, since I enjoyed the people so much and feel it is such a worthwhile cause, I have taken it under my belt to try to recruit some volunteers for them. If you are at all interested in helping out you can contact me at lokbp@yahoo.com Happy travels. Warren Hoffman |
