Just wondering if anyone has heard of 'Walking Tall', a children's organisation in Goa. After reading about some of the shonky organisations that are being run, I'd like to make sure this is a reputable one before I commit to working with them.
Has anyone ever been there or worked for them? |

Does anyone have personal experience of volunteering with Children Walking Tall? I'm planning to spend some time with them in December. Would love to hear from someone who's been there.

Hi Mercedes
I've just returned from 3 weeks in Goa with hubby and 8 year old daughter. I'd found out about Children Walking Tall before we went and had been in email contact with them. We took out a big bag of kids clothes etc for them and met up with Robert & Shermina when we got there. They invited us to go out into the slums with them where they do a lot of their work which we did, as well as go and visit The Mango House which is the home they have set up. EVERYTHING they are doing is entirely above board and I have nothing but praise for the work they are doing. We were welcomed into the slums with open arms by people that had little but would give everything! We feel so grateful for meeting them and being welcomed into their lives and are all on a bit of a downer now we are back here, wondering if jobs etc here are worth it, and couldn't we be doing more? We realise that we can't change the way of the world but if everyone does a little then that at least is a start. PLEASE do contact Shermina and Robert, I am sure they would be grateful for any help that you could give. The website is www.childrenwalkingtall.com They are a registered charity in the UK. thanks and kind regards jane x

Jane,
You picked the best charity in Goa today to support. Rob and Shermina are lovely people devoting their time to the cause of street children. Here is the thread where you can learn more about them http://www.holidaytruths.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=25288 Regards |

Hey thanks guys... Just found the thread... (Hi Jane)
GoanCanuck... Are we really well known in Calangute...? It's great if we are, it's only really our first year (well we're just over a year old but the first 4 or 5 months was spent researching. The first real thing we did was on Christmas Day when we took (if my memory is as good as I hope) 150 presents to the slums). You can get the correct amount from our January? newsletter off our website http://www.ChildrenWalkingTall.com/Newsletters.htm. We're hoping to have the 'Mango House' open very shortly, but as with everything in Goa.. It all takes forever to get all the right signatures on all the right papers... (It took me 3 months before I could buy my own bike let alone open a children's charity!) We currently have about 14 volunteers, many help at our schools in the slums and also have been painting at 'The Mango House'. If you're interested about volunteering (we expect a recent police check for volunteers - as we're a registered British charity), but if you're already traveling you're still more than welcome to see what we're doing. Thanks again for all the talk about us, and I'm glad that people think we're doing a good job... Thanks Rob http://www.ChildrenWalkingTall.com |

A little news for those interested with Children Walking Tall....
School The new school term started in June and we were adimant that we would get at least a handful of children into a local school, we thought it would be a relatively easy job, but this wasn’t the case. We started by visiting the local school with about 20 children, they were not very interested in help, firstly they said all the children required birth certificates (which they don’t), then they said there were no spaces, not enough teachers, the excuses went on. Thankfully our persistance paid off and we managed to get five children into school, and then another couple, then 6 more, and then some in another school. In the end after a lot of running around we managed to get 43 children into school. A huge thank you goes to Aloysuis for his hard work and Kirsty and the other volunteers that helped. Education is actually free in Goa but the last month has shown why not many children go to school as we had to buy uniforms, books, bags, shoes, equiment, tiffin tins etc for all the children. The cost definitely adds up. Some of the families have 9 children and it would be impossible for them to have them all educated and a struggle just to have one… We will continue on our drive to promote education and hope that we give more children the chance of an education. The best part is, the children love it and are so proud of their uniforms. Some of the children walk past the Mango House in the morning on the way to school and shout out at the top of their voices Hello Robert, Hello Shermina, Hello Sir (Aloysuis), Hello Didi (Sangetta) – It’s lovely to hear them.... www.ChildrenWalkingTall.com |
