Volunteering in the South (Kerala/Karnataka/T.Nadu) for 6 months (Sept-Feb)

Hi all,

Have just come back from 9 months in India and I am desperate to go back and escape the cess pit (London) that I currently live and work in!

I'd quite like to 'give something back' this time and would really appreciate the opportunity to teach English or get involved with underpriv.kids or young adults or anything where I can get stuck in for 5-6months.

I'm not asking to be paid for volunteering (otherwise how is it volunteering?) but by the same token, I dont really want to have to pay the organisation either. If a room and the occasional meal were going for free then I'd appreciate that though its not a necessity.

Can anyone recommend somewhere in the South that might be worth a go? In particular, Kerala/Karnataka/Tamil Nadu

Nonne (Malayalam for Thanks, not sure about the English spelling though!)

You might want to try with these guys http://www.akanksha.org/ . They seem to be based in Mumbai and Pune but they also seem to be working on tsunami relief projects. I can't vouch for them so check them out yourself. Also, scroll through the volunteering sub-forum of IndiaMike for ideas, it's the one you posted your message in.

Good luck with it.

You could also check out RIDE. I spent a couple of days with them in Kanchipuram and they seemed to be doing good work. Small, very friendly organization. The couple of volunteers they had working for them had positive reports.

Try www.dalitsolidarity.org it' a non-profit that aims to uplift the Dalit people through education. They always need volunteers to teach in Tamil Nadu, south of Chennai. I spent a few months with them this year, what a great experience.
