volunteering in the North

Heya everyone,
I was wondering if anyone could recommend place(s) to volunteer in Northern India, preferably around either the Nepalese or Tibetan border.

I know there are heaps of places on the web, but most want a hell of a lot of money to work for them, and I feel strange about forking out money to work!

I have a degree in anthropology and English, so I would love to get into some English Language classes or something similar.

Cheers!

Are you staying at a guest house near by or do they arrange something for you? And what type of work are you doing? (if you don't mind me asking)

Hi mpop,

could you give us some more details about the computing classes you teach. I am about to leave my job as a Web Developer in London to go on an extended tour of India, Nepal and Tibet and am really interested in maybe sharing some of my skills there.

Thanks a lot

Hi again

thanks for your reply and i appreciate the info. I would love to settle for a few weeks somewhere in India and do something useful so am seriously thinking of heading upto Dharamasala when i get there.

I have also handed in my notice to my job today so that is actually quite a relief and am now starting to really think about my trip. If there is any other info that you think may be helpful then i would be grateful to read that.

In intend to spend Jan/Feb in Goa and Kerala so if you are about then give me a shout!

Hello,
There are some places in Dharamsala looking for computer people. Please check out san diego friends of tibet. or google volunteer tibet...they are looking for people with backgrounds in computers.

Also in Dharamsala, volunteers can help with leprosy, teaching English to adults at the Yong Ling school in the evenings or teaching English to veterans ..i forget the name of the place..something like Gu Chu Su .... they need all the help they can help and everyone appreciates it.
