Volunteering in India: Your Experiences

What are your experiences of volunteering for charities/NGOs in India? Good, bad, unexpected? Why did you do it? Would you do it again or recommend a friend? Please help potential volunteers by sharing your knowledge, either here or on a new thread if more appropriate. Thanks!

I originally started volunteering over 5 years ago, it was sort of a reflex action to my friends suggestion, so I quit my job and headed to Goa... I didn't know much about the charity which, was probably the downfall, as it turned out to be a bit too religious for my liking and also didn't seem to hold the same values which I hold close to my heart... But like with many things, I didn't realise these at the start and started off with all the dedication a placement requires, Over the 8 months I was there I gradually became disillusioned with how they ran their organisation and in the left.. I must say that working there did change my life though, the children were fabulous and in the end I stayed in Goa and started my own project which now takes on volunteers, I do think most people should try volunteering somewhere as it does give you an insight into the problems other people face, I've been doing my project for 5 years and I love it! although Absolutely shattering!!!!
