Volunteering in Conservation

Hi All!

I'm off to India in 5 weeks and was just planning to go for a month but am now thinking of volunteering in the Environmental field for an extra month. I completed my degree in Environmental Science last year and have been struggling to find work and I feel some hands-on experience in India maybe just the trick to help my resume stand out from the crowd. I've been looking at organisations like 'Projects Abroad' and 'GVI' but am wondering if it's necessary to fork out that much money to get the experience I'm after? I love the idea of living with the locals while I'm volunteering though...I'll be just visiting South India this trip so am after an opportunity in the South and if anybody could give any advice it would be greatly appreciated

Thankyou!

First welcome to India. Secondly i much appreciate that you would like to volunteer in the field of Environment. Well, volunteering will def boost your CV and as for organizations help, I might go for GVI(one of my english friend volunteered ther, she found the org very helpful , friendly and safe), then you will not have to worry about anything. they will plan everything from projects to logistic, stay etc and you can ask for a rural placement in south of india. I believe they have offices in chennai and bangalore
the only back drop of going for a project on your own is "guarantee' of a appropriate project. But even then if you want to try, then go to the volunteer forun in IM, else google and write mailers to each organization, or see in lonely planet or visit sites like indicorps etc..I hope it helps otherwise feel free to write back
