Volunteering in Ahmedabad
Hi! I'll be visiting for 4 months in December, and would like to know some places to volunteer. I love working with children. I can speak some hindi and some gujrati, and will be taking language classes to improve in those areas. Oh and I'm 21 so the volunteering can be super active
Thanks in advance everyone! ![]() |

There are several places that you can give your time to. Give me a few days and I will get you a small list together. We have several people in our expat group that donate their time. Also, while you are here feel free to join our expat group in case you need any help or want to meet new people. Give me a few days and I will get you the names of places where people I know have volunteered. Thanks.

there are lots of NGOs in the city. would help if you can be a little more specific. e.g. What's your availability? do you want to volunteer full-time, a few hours/day, a few hours/week? do you mind some traveling, can you arrange transportation on your own? do you expect any kind of remuneration?

It would be for about 3-4 weeks. I can arrange my own transportation, but if they had their own living arrangements (like on base) that would be fine as well. I could do a few hours a day. No renumeration. Thanks for your help.

The NGO in the Gandhi Ashram is Manav Sadhna
I will be coming there in a couple of months to volunteer. If any reading this are in the Lost Angeles area and interested, Manav Sadhna is associated closely with Be The Cause.

CAN'T be that all arrows point in only 1 direction - Manav Sadhna...!!!!
while we wait for what Reasa turns up with.. the following options come to my mind... There is a Blind People's association opposite IIM, Vastrapur. A few people i know during college had mentioned that they volunteer there. There's a also one near Manav Mandir. Secondly, if you like tending to pets, then i know of a lady who is a family friend and who likes to pick up injured and stray pets and take care of them.. i can patch you up with her (will have to find out about here though) |

yes, there're lots of NGOs in Ahm', for some reason, i can't think of many that work specifically with children.
There's this one that work with differently abled children, but i don't have their contact right now. i'll just list here some other NGOs in case you're interested: - SEWA (www.sewa.org): everyone knows about SEWA; it's even listed in lonely planet i think. they do great work. i don't think they actively look for interns, but they have a boutique in town where they may need help. - SEVA cafe(prounounced SEWA): it's run by volunteer who cook, wait tables, and clean. They institute an honor system where customers pay whatever amount they deem fit. Profit goes to charities. - Himmat: started out as a female workers collective after the riots. Now they're also doing domestic violence intervention. Let me know if you want to know more. - SPRAT (www.sprat.in): the one i'm interning at. The biggest division is CARAVAN, a network of empowerment centers where we offer different services for the community, and yes, including the youth. |
