volunteering for a month in nov 09
Hi
I have november free, have been to India a couple of times and would like to go back to volunteer. Im thinking a childrens charity or suchlike. I know its not a long time but all I can manage at the moment. Man! I never thought it would be so hard finding somewhere that would like a hand!! I am willing to look after my own accomodation etc , dont need any money, am fit and strong, will paint, whatever it takes. I just want to give my time. Im thinking Goa or Tamil Nadil . All ideas appreciated. Mango house appear to be full and not that forthcoming in accepting anything!! Please help as Im sending for my visa today and dont want to waste my money on that if no-one needs me. Cheers Jane |

although not a direct answer to your post, but you can refer to http://www.giveindia.org/ for list of ngo's working in various sectors.
from wiki GiveIndia is a not for profit organization in India that aims to channel and provide resources to Non-Governmental Organisations across India. It is a web portal which sources funds and contributions from individuals across India and the world and directs these donations to causes and requirements of NGOs. Conceived in 1999 by IIM-A graduate Venkat Krishnan, it is run and managed by a team of professionals. Venkat wanted to create a credible link between people willing to donate and grass root NGOs. Most grass root NGOs do not have adequate systems in place to raise awareness about causes and consequently raise funds to support these causes.

Jane, (Lizziedripin)
Sorry that I couldn't help at the Mango House, like I offered in our emails we can have you on 'standby' if someone drops out last minute, but at present all our places are full. We only have a limited number of places and they usually get booked up months in advance (at present the next free place is for March 2011! We are just a small charity and don't have the staff to take on more volunteers as they all need guidance and support and it can take a month for them just to settle in, learn names and personalities of the children etc, Short term volunteer placements tend to benefit the volunteer more (rather than the organisation) and as such many organisations charge volunteers 'for the experience', which in my opinion detracts from the original purpose, which is the care of the children. Again, I am sorry we did not have places available

I am 43 years old from Mumbai, took an early retirement and wanted to do some thing worthwhile for society
I approached various social service organizations / ashrams but no one was interested to offer any work They were only interested in collecting donations So this is how it is |

Yes. It is absolutely correct.
No one wants free service. They need donations, donations, and donation only. |

There are genuine places that do like 'free service', we have between 6 and 9 volunteers at anyone time, I guess there can't be so many places like us as we always get far too many requests to volunteer.. Obviously money is good also, but never ask visitors for money.. If people want to give, they'll offer...
![]() Perhaps the smaller organisations might be more likely to accept volunteers, the bigger the organisations the more money they need to continue working, smaller organisations need help as much as money.... Hope this helps Thanks Rob |

have a look at this website, a friend on mine had a great time there.
www.lovedalefoundation.org In regards to volunteering, all the advice I have received was to wait until arrival in India and find a place that way, it depends how much time you have though. Good Luck |
