Volunteering by Residents?

Hi,

I'm considering a move to Hyderabad on a work assignment, and will be there for probably 2 years. I knew that a lot of my non-work activities weren't going to be doable in India (the reports of traffic are scaring me off my trying my daily bike ride there), but I'm a bit surprised to be having trouble finding organizations to volunteer with? Most volunteer opportunities seemed aimed at people who want to come to India for several months or more and work full time with an organization - not at residents who have a few hours a week to spend. Is this something that exists but I won't see on the internet? Or is this just not something people do? Here in the US, I do tutoring/mentoring for what we refer to here as 'underprivileged kids' (though everything is relative) and my husband fixes cars for a local non-profit that helps homeless people find jobs and generally get back on their feet. I know these kinds of things might not be useful in India, but it would feel weird not doing anything...
