Volunteering at Delhi's Nirmal Hriday
Hi, I'm planning to settle down for a few months of reading & planning & thought I could make myself useful while doing so. Does anyone know whether Delhi's Nirmal Hriday welcomes volunteers? I have no relevant qualifications & don't know whether they have the same policy as the Kolkata branch, but I would prefer to be based in Delhi.
Can anyone shed light? Contact numbers, experiences, etc. are most welcome. |

Just found your post. I do have telephone numbers and other contact stuff on my laptop at the house, and will try to get it to you in the next few days.
But the answer is YES, they do accept volunteers. You normally start at 8am, til noon and from 3pm til 6pm. Thursdays off....but that should be after consulting with the Sisters. You can work at either the baby house (forgotten the name....sorry), the house for mentally handicapped and physically handicapped or at Nirmal Hrday where there are mainly adults in the last stages of dying. If you do decide to go, please make sure that you look carefully at all the information as if you have not worked somewhere like Calcutta, or Nirmal Hrday before you need to know exactly what you're in for and then decide if it's really for you. They do emhpasise that these are not hospitals, but try mainly to make their inmates feel that it is their home and not an institution. Best of luck Shanthi |

Hi Shanthi & thanks for replying.
I have to say I'm suprised by the hours of work required. I know it's selfish but I'd hoped for time to visit the surrounding area & relax while doing the Mother Theresa thing; something more like a 5 day, 9-5 schedule. Do you know whether the days & hours of work are flexible or if they are the same at the Kolkata mission? If you have the Delhi number then I can get the info first hand |
