Volunteer work, not pre-arranged overseas

Hi all!

Looking at volunteer work in India for about 4weeks but online can only seem to find volunteer middle men who want to charge a large amount of money to organise it for me and offer a lot of unwanted frills.

Does anyone know of organisations who I could contact directly? I would be wanting to volunteer my time in helping in any way I can and would want to take care of the rest of the arrangements myself such as accomodation.

Cheers,

Hi LozJ, welcome to IndiaMike. You can browse in this part of the forum for NGOs and volunteer experiences.

If you can't find enough information, you can give more info about your volunteer intentions, like field (healthcare, environment...), area... This will increase your chances to get a satisfying answer.

In general: 4 weeks are not a lot of time for volunteer work in India, so it's better to contact an NGO experienced with volunteers.

Good luck!

Hi LozJ,
I know what you mean about the middle men, some volunteering opportunities cost a fortune! I've done some research online. I'm going to India for the first time this November, and have found somewhere to volunteer in McLeod Ganj called LHA. Most of the volunteering available is teaching english to tibetan refugees (no teaching experience needed). You don't have to pay to volunteer and you arrange and pay for your own accomodation. You can choose to pay about US$110 for orientation on arrival which helps to fund the organisation, but this is optional. They have some short and long term opportunities available. Of course it depends where in India your going. I'll be interested to see what other replies you get, because I'm interested in other volunteering like this, especially in the field of arts and video. I've also seen some other free/cheap opportunities on helpXchange.net. Hope this helps.

you could try searching for "charity goa" in google as we do not charge any fee, although our volunteer calendar is full for the next year (upto July 2010) - although people do occasionally drop out at the last minute.. But we need a police check...

Thanks

IM's rules forbid 'Poipleshadow' from mentioning his organisation by name. It's "Children Walking Tall", http://www.childrenwalkingtall.com/.
