Volunteer with Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata in November?
I'm planning to volunteer with the MCs in Kolkata beginning in november 2010. Was wondering if there is anyone else who is planning to do this too? Or if there is any volunteer, who will be there in november, and will be so kind to help me to start there? I will come alone and will need some help. Thanks
Nika

Volunteering in Kolkata at the Mother House
Hi there Nika,
I volunteered with the Sisters of Charity in Kolkata 2009. It was one fantastic experience, not hard work but for me emotionally difficult, equally though so rewarding and will remain always one of the best things that I have ever done overseas. You will not be alone, there are dozens of volunteers from all over the world, all ages. Go to the Mother house in AJ Bose Road on a Wednesday or a Friday afteroon at 3pm to register, the sisters will sort everyone out as they have 'homes'all over Kolkata. Mass is at 7am in the morning (you dont have to go, but I found it a nice start to the day) followed by breakfast of bananas, chai and bread, then off to work, you will be travelling with others if you walk or catch a bus, you will not be on your own. I stayed in Sudden Street, cheap to live and cheap to eat, lots of other volunteers were there also, so it will not be long before you make friends, it is easy walking to most places in Kolkata, the metro is close by and lots of other transport if you want to go further afield. I was placed at Shishu Bahvan the children's home in AJ BOse Road so I would walk there each morning. I did a morning shift only you can do double shifts if you want. I was in India for 6 weeks 2 weeks with the sisters, the sisters and the volunteers were absolutely fantastic. I was a woman travelling on my own, had no problems, but equally I was prudent, did not walk the streets at night etc. I am going back to Kolkata this December unfortunately I will not be there in November. You will be ok! If you want more info email me I am happy to help. Best wishes Kerry

Hi Kerry,
Could I know where you stayed and how much you spent for accomodation per day? My friends and I will be going there this coming July 9th-16th 2011, first time volunteering at Missionaries of Charity so we're not to sure how to get around. Would appreciate any advise you would have before we had off in July. Thank you!
