Thumbs up My friend did it

Many years ago my college mate went to Bangalore to ACTS Institute. He is a carpenter. I believe it is a religious organization with good reputation. He not only helped them he provided carpentery skills for people to make a living at it. Very rewarding and changed his life for ever.

You might want to check with http://www.aidindia.org/CMS/ . They're mostly looking for Tamil-speaking people (which you might consider learning in 18 months) but make exceptions for qualified professionals. See their basic URL http://www.aidindia.org/ too for possible other projects elsewhere, it's hard to predict how their Chennai projects will be faring 1.5 years from now.

You can try Habitat for Humanity and also Idealist.org. However with charity organizations do be prepared to pay for your own room and board.
