socially responsible volunteer placement organizations
Hi,
has anyone had any experience with volunteer placement organizations working in India? I know a lot of prospective volunteers get turned off by the hefty program enrollment fees, but I think there's a lot to be said for working with an organization that provides training and works with local Indian NGOs. For one, it's far too easy for a well-intentioned volunteer without directly relevant skills to get in the way. Secondly, not being from India, there's no way I could possibly know the culturally-appropriate way of helping someone in need in India. What might work in my culture might be invasive in another, etc... I've been looking at a number of organizations, and Cross-Cultural Solutions or International Cultural Adventures in particular seem to be pretty socially responsible- at least on paper. Has anyone had any experience with these or any other organizations? |
